The milk car needs a 5-rail (1019 or 6019, modern 12746) specialized 0-27 track section to operate. (For 0 gauge track, use a UCS or RCS, modern 65530)
Magnet-only 0-27 track sections 6009, 6029, 6149, 5149, or 65149 lack the control rails needed to contact the slide-shoes and are thus incompatible.

N.B. There is also an accompanying platform for the milk car, but it is not strictly required.

Rob,

I use O27 track and have several of the O27 remote tracks.  One warning about the milk car, which I have 2 of: the doors hit the platform of the 'catcher' piece, assuming you will be using one.  I had to put a thin (can't remember, wood, plastic, whatever, not metal though) under the track to allow for the doors to swing open.

I assume you will have the same issue.

Walt,

There are extra slots on the fenced sides to move the silver platform down to O27 height. Lionel designed it for both O and O27 track

I started by testing my milk car and platform.  I realize the included pictures are very blurry but I had a hard time holding the camera and operating the milk car at the same time.

I assure you that the platform was on the lower set of holes to get that out of the way.

I am including an image of the O27 5-rail track too.

The doors hit the platform as I said originally.  If someone knows something that I'm doing wrong please let me know - I will surely appreciate any and all advice on how to get things to work.

i'm not sure i can get my track in that position.  the base of the platform has what I might call 'tabs' where the outer rails would hit.  the track, when i put it on those tabs, is not stable.

BTW: why doesn't yours have soldered in wires like all of the ones that i've seen and have?  Just curious

I noticed that for the 2 tabs on each end, one on each end nearer the platform has a slot cut into it.   I tried putting the track in the slots but since there are slots on the one further from the platform the track sat at an angle.

This shouldn't be that complicated!!!!!!!!!!   I also have full '0" scale  track which I really don't use anymore but I know that the milk car works well with that track.

I put the platform and specialty track back in storage so I can't try out things right now.  Too busy with getting the layout up.  But when I tear it down if I remember I'll play some more and see if i can get the track situated as you pictured.

THanks - walt

My track is sitting just outside the closer-to-the-platform double-cut tabs(blue circles). The other slots are for RCS & UCS.

My wires(bell wire in this case) are soldered in... I ran the wires under the layout back in 1971. You can just see them inside the red circle.

I got my platform and specialty track and milk car out to try what you said.  Here's my observations.  Please tell me if I'm doing it correctly:

The remote track is sitting on all 4 tabs and NOT using the slots in the tabs closet to the platform.

The double door that swings open is rather far away from the platform though.

because the track is now set back a bit from the platform, the doors are able to fully open.

I have not yet applied power so I can't tell if the milk containers will actually reach the platform when thrown.

These pictures are the best that I can take for now.

Please offer your comments.

thanks Rob

will i still have to elevate the 2 tracks on either side of the remote track ?

One more observation about positioning the O-27 track.  If I read things correctly, when using O-27 track, which I am, the track sits ON the 4 tabs.  If I don't set it on the tabs the platform is then too high, even using the lower slots for the platform itself.

What I don't feel comfortable with is that by sitting the track on the 4 tabs it seems unstable.

Possibly when there are tracks on both sides and they are screwed down firmly it will keep the remote track solidly in place.

Can someone confirm this?

thanks = walt

Walt, haven't played with one of these in some years as I gave it away, IIRC when assembled correctly the track is located by the other tracks just as if it was a normal piece. I just can't recall if it lifted that section up a bit  compared to the others as that would seem to be working the track pins loose. ?? Hopefully someone has one available to show us.
