I got a 3rail Sunset PRR N1 in. I'm working on the chassis first. I lubed everything, mounted and adjusted the motor. She runs pretty smooth now on just a battery.

So now I'm looking at all the original wiring and board. Someone gutted some of the stock wiring and removed the speaker. So I don't know where the speaker leads should come from yet.

There's an identical 2 wire receptacle on the opposite side of the board as the one shown on the far right above. There is a screw terminal post on the front that has the incoming pick-up wires already attached as well as the motor leads from the 4 wire engine harness on the far left end.

I started searching the internet for any info and all I got was a brochure stating QSI digital sound and Seuthe smoke.

Anybody know anything about this stock QSI board?

Ooops. it says cruise commander right on it. It actually works, just no sounds. So I'm guessing that it was a replacement and there's no sounds?

Off to find Cruise info. looks like a post that showed cruise commander 4.1

Finding the Cruise  Commander inside has got to be a bonus, far better than an anemic 20year old QSI system.  Adding ERR sound is only another $85.

Been returning lately to my earlier upgrade installations and fine tuning such things as component locations, tethers and wire routing.  The absolute worst job I find is cobbling together sufficiently sturdy and flexible tethers.

Beautiful engine. I have one with basic QSI sound. I've thought of selling it but it runs smooth as silk and the amazing 3rd Rail detail makes it a real keeper.

Is yours 2 rail? Could you tell me the size of the bell in mm? (height and diameter if possible). Mine is missing that and the headlight glass.

I connected the front boiler cover board to track power and the now lights work. I removed the marker lights though from just the front.

I used to like them until I read that they weren't used much. When they were, they were usually white?

Anybody want to buy her? Very fair deal.

Joe,

The bell is 8.2 mm wide at the bottom and 7 mm high.  The Precision Scale PRR steam loco bell is only slightly smaller and should work fine.  The red pilot beam markers were used on several steam classes, primarily prior to WWII.  They would be off unless the locomotive was running in reverse (with no cars coupled to the smokebox end of the loco) and was outside of yard limits.  The red markers would signify the rear of the train.  Thus the markers would nearly always be off.

The other 'signature detail' your N1s is missing is the 3-rung pilot ladder (photo below).  These were a cast brass piece from 3rd Rail but you could make one yourself in brass like Norm Charbonneau did.

If you're thinking of selling it to a 3-railer then I think you should replace the 3-rail coupler and not install a Kadee.  Note that 3rd Rail couplers are different from Lionel couplers in that the centering boss is different.  A Lionel coupler can be used, it just won't be self-centering.

Am I missing something, who on the 2 rail forum would want to buy a 3 rail engine?   Generally the folks on this forum are running 2 rail.    By the way, that would be a great price in 2 rail!

Many of us find threads by using the "Recent Posts" list. I'm sure some 3 rail modelers will see Joe's posts.
