A friend brought one of his locomotives over because it didn't work correctly and wanted to rule out his Legacy installation.

The locomotive is a Lionel 6-11100.  In 2008 he had ERR upgrade it with a Cruise Commander M.  A few months ago he noticed that he had to keep reprogramming it.  When I ran it today it remembered it's ID but would only run 2 or 3 feet and stop.  If you hit the start button of the CAB2 it would start up and go another couple of feet.

Originally I was thinking antenna but, now I think it more.  Is it possibly a R2LC failure?  I did not take it apart to swap boards.

Have you tried unplugging the radio board and plugging it back in again? Sometimes micro corrosion forming on the pins can cause problems that can be fixed by this simple trick.

Running a few inches and then stopping is sometimes caused by intermittent contact with the outside rails and the wheels, Make sure the wheels are clean. Check the pilot and trailing trucks to make sure the axle wipers are making contact and the ground wires to them are intact.

Thanks, RoyBoy.  This isn’t my locomotive so I did not take it apart, at least not yet.  The wheels and rollers look good so I don’t think it is a pickup problem.  Also, when it stops, you can restart simply by readdressing it (Eng # Start) all without touching it.  You might be right about reseating the R2LC.  I am inclined to think the problem is the R2LC because of the behavior - go 2 feet and stop, repeatedly.  I also noticed that I didn’t seem to have throttle control for the 2 feet it moved.  I just want to see if anyone had seen this before I open it.
