I'm amused by the apparent lack of backup. Apparently, they don't have any more of the parts CD's this is the last one.

The server was probably nothing more than a over glorified desktop. A diy server should at least have some type of RAID storage. The same goes for work stations with critical projects. It's not that hard now a days to make a whole system back-up and store them elsewhere (like a friends house). It's also a good thing to have replacement hard-drives standing by. A
With all the cloud backup services available, there's no excuse for not having off-site backup. I have both off-site backup, off-line backup, and my NAS with RAID and it's own separate backup drive. My backup processes run automatically and just give me a status alert if anything goes wrong, or of course, good news if the backup goes with no errors. 
My off-line backup prompts me every week to fire up an off-line USB drive for a complete system and data backup, then shut it down. That's in the event of ransomware, they can't get to the power switch of that drive.
