My daughter wants a "girl's" GG1.   I have several good candidates to become pink.... I think the MTH Rail King Conrail is going to get sacrificed.   I've ordered Pennsy decals for it.... now the pink paint is the head scratcher..... Weaver nor TruColor make a pink paint as far as I can tell..... would a Krylon paint bomb work for this purpose???   Any other ideas for a good paint???

Thanks!

Match or layer your paints by type, not just brand.

A lacquer will set thinnest, dry quickest. It allows for very even looking painting, without wetting the full item each coat. And if top coated quickly, I don't even sand between coats. Keep it on metal bodies, no plastic. Most paints can be applied over lacquer. So if pink "has to go" one day and you don't cake it on... sand lightly, and squirt fresh paint on.(same if you want a clear coat to change the look to have more shine).

Enamel usually gives a thicker look, but better single coat shine if you prefer that "plastic M&M" look. Enamels tend to be harder to chip, but if they do, chip large & are harder to hide a repair on.

A white primer, or grey primer will change the pink topcoat shade slightly. Unless paint coat(s) are thick, or numerous.

Choose what's right for you right, and use light coats.

I would like to second the idea of just going out and getting a Williams or Williams by Bachmann pink GG-1 Girls Set.  They look great and Larry Harrington of WbB has done all the hard work of picking the right shade of pink (an interesting story in itself) and selecting PRR stripes that go well with the pink color. Heck, someone may even sell you the pink GG-1 by itself without the heavyweight passenger cars that go with it.

Williams also sold a freight set pulled by the pink GG-1 that used cars painted to resemble the original Lionel girls set.

Why paint, when someone else has already had the factory do it for you?

Just a thought.

maybe he wants to do a father daughter project which will give her a lasting memory for years to come. i still have the bridge and tunnel my grandfather built for our Lionel layout, neither of which will ever be on my 2 rail layout and not worth anything to anyone other than me and my memories of him and the layout.

BMo trains do it yourself and create a lasting memory!!!!!!!!!

As much as I like to paint, Ed has point I hadn't considered just mentioning the stripes. Getting that arc "right" and symmetrical left to right from the "front" view isn't real easy. Harder if you are a novice.

If you paint it, I would also suggest automotive pin stripe for the stripe(s)

It can be lifted when first put on, and will stay put well once burnished.

Well I like some of the suggestions -- I looked at the Williams, but I have enough GG1s now in the fleet -- Williams, Lionel, K-Line and MTH.   The other reason I don't want a set is I have enough Curious George, Sponge Bob and Loony Toons cars to entertain the kids.  Likely the best runner with sound that no one has wanted has been the Rail King Conrail (yep, I tried to sell it, but no takers).   I have ordered the Microscale Pennsy GG1 decal kit already for $12.   I have a buddy with real steady hands that gets them on perfect everytime.   I am likely going to pick a darker paint than the standard girl's trains colours -- more fucia.   I had actually thought of doing this in Hello Kitty, with the Pennsy 5 gold stripes (and may yet if I can find a good decal in the right size).    The other nice thing about the MTH is if I want to jump the body onto a PS2 unit, I can, I have a couple that are the same era production as the Conrail (can't do that with a Williams).

Love the guy with the custom colours.   I am going to investigate that.

Thanks, guys for your input.... is is appreciated.

My first idea was to talk her into getting a red one made in Canadian Pacific Multimark (Pacman), but that wasn't going to fly..... you're right... the colour of pink isn't important.... something dark enough to show off the Pennsy stripes would be the best idea....

Actually, FWIW, the semi-scale Williams GG-1 shell will mate very nicely with an MTH PS-2 Railking frame.  Depending on the year of production, the shell can be swapped with either zero or very minimal modifications to the frame.  I "upgraded" my daughter's pink GG-1 to PS-2 by just swapping shells with a Railking - took just a few minutes.  See thread here.

Mike needs to release a new Girls set in Rail-King PS-3 I have been hunting for the original Pink Proto sound one and have found nothing yet

the other thing that he needs to consider is re releasing the Club Steam engines in the MTH Colors

I own three Pink Girls sets and they are the HIt every year I put them out on the Display that I do for our local Library.

Results are in -- we used Plutonium paint (color - Vegas) and Microscale decals.  The Pennsy decals were a pain in the butt because you'd have to cut each letter to space them prototypically.... we also grounded the front and rear truck better.... it ran like crap before.  The paint was a little coarser than we would have liked... however.  Started out being a Rail King locosounds Conrail unit.... my daughter is getting it for her birthday in October!
