The SD-40 of that vintage is in the Lionel Supplements #26.  Go to the link below, pull down the menu and select #26.

The brushes are common for most of the motors of that era, any parts dealer has a bin of them.  What springs are you looking for?  I may Actually have a compatible armature in my parts box.

Thank you for your response. I went to site Not sure if i am reading correctly (B-51, B51-2) but does not give any part numbers for the parts mentioned above.  

The springs needed is to hold brushes when I change them, unless not needed if not broken. I think i need to change the motor/armature because when running has this smell. I took apart and cleaned everything possible and lube areas as per manual. It almost seems like the front area does not roll smoothly as to the rear when moving with fingers. Last resort it to find a repair shop. I like troubleshooting first if i can. Let me know what you think or need more information. Take care and be safe20200509_15055020200509_150658

FWIW,  Re: Brush Springs...  if it's not broke, don't fix it..  these thing take a lot of punishment and are a PITA to replace. The brushes also last a for long time without performance issues.

Smell,  these motors typically have a slight petroleum/ozone odor,  motor/armature are not typical replacement items.

I suspect the odor is from the brush contact on the armature which creates a small spark /heat which causes on odor due to petroleum residue on the armature being heated.

"Smell" - I LOVE that SMELL!  When I was first introduced to Lionel trains, I was not quite 3 years old...My dad would run his Postwar trains the smell (combined with the pellet smoke) was intoxicating to me!  I remember my parents laughing at me a year or two later when I would catch a whiff of that similar scent from another different source, my eyes would get big and I would say, "I smell a train!"

Supplement 26, Page 8 (attached) has the exploded motor view with part numbers

Check the motor shaft worm gear on the axle gear for binding a fresh lube.  yes, these will have that motor smell, but, not like when you let the smoke out.

5D51E19A-B679-4E5A-B51C-2878A0F74E0EHere’s the item numbers you need. The brush plate assy includes the spring if you choose it. The brushes are the shunt type. The wire gets soldered to the brush holder. 
There a trick to oiling the top of the armature shaft. Unscrew the .050 Allen screw. Put a drop of oil in the hole. Replace the Allen screw till just makes contact with the armature shaft. Usually back the Allen screw out approx 1/4 turn. You should now be able to use your thumb to move the wheels which  will spin the armature.

Also, the adjustment on the armature shaft Allen screw should be checked. If, to tight will cause binding. If, to loose with cause the shaft to move to far up toward the armature plate.
