I don't think it's excessive friction in the driveline of my MPC-era Turbines (although MagneTraction can cause friction problems with side-rods rubbing against drivers) as the driveline turns quite freely with the motor removed and I use Yamalube moly grease in the worm gear box. The locos even "roll" fairly freely on the track when pushed by hand. They also "keep their cool" when running alone or even when pulling the easy-rolling Lionel FARR#5 freight consist they were intended to pull. There just seems to be a load "threshold," like my Williams Congressional consist, that sets off the overheating problem. As I hinted in my previous post on this, Lionel apparently had production problems with this loco when they moved it from Mt. Clemens to Mexico and the motor quality may have suffered. What PW "generation" are your Turbines?

I don’t know, Bill… really like the large keystone and large Pennsylvania, but the silver and red doesn’t have the style of the Tuscan or Brunswick with gold. At least it ain’t the Conrail bicentennial version Your Williams is much like my first GG1 - the MPC 8753. Pulled seven 15” aluminum passenger cars all day and never broke a sweat. Of course, that was before I ever saw a scale GG1!!!

My PW Lionel 671and 2020 from 46 has a Horizontal E-unit and bulb for smoke units, and a 671 with a 2020 Boiler bought as junk that's from 46 Horizontal E-unit with bulb for smoke unit repainted with new number 6200, and a 2020 That was a Junker repainted to a 682 has a slanted motor upright E unit with Heater smoke unit. I degrease and breakdown all PW engines and use Lucas white lithium grease and basic gun oil, they all run well I do that pretty much with all my engines every couple years degrease trucks also change brushes and springs, and service e units. I use Index cards on all my engine for service and repairs that were made.

Hello Pennsy fans.  Great images as usual!  Jonathan, your collections of GG1s is impressive.

I have five PRR electrics, not counting my two bicentennial ones, that I bought for my late 40s themed layout.  Two MTH P5a, one MTH GG1, and two WbB GG1s.  This is currently five more than I need since I do not, and probably will not, have catenary on my layout. However, the two conventional WbB engines I do run with 14 MTH/Williams 18" passenger cars at shows which is a good set for that.

I bought my first electric, a P5a Modified, because I thought it was a neat looking engine.  I subsequently bought a P5a Boxcab to double head with the Modified but it is disintegrating in its box (zinc pest).  I got the MTH PS2 3v GG1 at a very low price that I could not pass it up, and has been in the box (except for pics) since I bought it.

Speaking of the Silver GG1s, I have the same road number as you Bill but in the Weaver model.  One day I'll track down 4880 and 4872 to go with it

I used this as the background for numerous fantasy schemes that I have posted on this forum in the past.  Also note the two MTH Conrail GG1s working upgrade in the distance.

These photos are all circa 2010 when I had room for a 5 track yard.  As can be seen, I love electric locomotives!  While not all of these are PRR, a majority of my electrics started with the PRR or ended up in Penn Central.  I know we must not speak that evil name in this thread though!

Let's just say my next house will have room for my train collection.  I moved out of the house that most of my photos are from in 2016 (long story) so I no longer have a dedicated train room.  My collection spent 4 years in a storage unit and now they are everywhere at my current home.  To clarify, everywhere that my wife does not go.  She has no problem with me collecting trains, but doesn't want them taking over the house which is a very fair trade.

When I do operate, it is either on my TCA Division module or at the Paradise and Pacific Railroad at the Scottsdale Railroad Park.  Sadly, I have had a poor attendance record post COVID.  Something I need to rectify. 

As to missing road numbers, I have a lot of duplicate road numbers and models in HO.  My plan is to eventually repaint the non-boxed duplicates into the missing road numbers.  Most of my GG1s are actually HO.  They have the twin advantages of requiring less storage space and cost less.

I still am looking to add a few O ones, but I am in no hurry until I have a place to display them properly.  I'd like to finish out the Weaver made ones just to say I have all 8 of the paint schemes.  I am missing Amtrak and Conrail Blue.  I'd also like to add a few more 2 rail G's for the ready track on my future NY&LB.

Of my 5 N scale GG1s, 3 are Amtrak and one is PC 4902 in American Railroads Blue.  As luck would have it, my lone PRR one is 4935 which I have in O. 

The reality for me though is that train acquisition has become a pretty low priority for me as I am involved with other hobbies, work, and focusing on my youngest daughter who will be officially a teen in two weeks.  I also just need to downsize my train collection in general, but to do that I need to catalog all the unwanted items which are buried in a shed that I will not be going through until the weather cools down sometime in October.

Funny you should mention that.  This is where I am going with what was previously painted in Conrail blue.  I need to take a Dremel tool to the carbody to expose the joint lines and add a few dents which is how NJDOT's GG1s looked near the end.  I will be numbering this one 4879.

No.  There was a forum member that was collecting names of individuals that were having this problem, but I was waiting for a formal announcement from MTH.  Must have been a hidden warranty because I never saw it.  By the time MTH made the announcement they were getting the shells, they told me I was too late to get on the list.

I'm really sorry to hear that.  :-(

Out of the box, the MTH Box Cab P5a was very nice.  I couldn't afford one when they were released, so I guess I dodged a bullet.  Going to 2 rail for PRR also changed the calculus a bit later.

CAPPilot: Contact MTH direct my email is in my profile and I can get you the contact information.I just got mine back from MTH they swapped out the shell due to a posting on this forum about the differences in the shellsPS2 vs PS3.

That is really unfortunate. I saw the MTH announcement of another run of P5a locomotives earlier this year. I figured they would be making a lot of extra shells.  Seems like it would be a low cost insurance policy to cast some extras.

Hopefully you got a set of the plastic 3D printed models for the JLC GG1 that were discussed on the forum a while back.

For zinc pest issues, I wonder if we should have a front page post with "service campaigns" on higher-dollar items where folks can vote, or log their issues so if and when the manufacturers feel like throwing us a bone during a follow-on run, they can. Or aspiring young entrepreneurs could use the info to make high bang for the buck 3D models.

Really one of the last… Nice!!! Although based on your screen name, I would have thought you’d have gone for 4877. I drove from Brooklyn to Matawan to see the last operational GG1’s on their last weekend. Yes, they were beaten up, but still beautiful. If I remember correctly, shortly before the GG1’s were retired, one heading up a NJDOT commuter run coming out of Penn Station was in an accident where it rear-ended a stationary work train. It was reported that there were no major injuries on the commuter train due to the massive GG1 absorbing most of the impact.

As I remember 4877 was repainted in Tuscan with a large keystone for their farewell weekend.

I plan on renumbering my MTH 4876 to 4877 since it is already painted in Tuscan Red.  NJT repainted 4877 in 1982 and it ran in regular service until formal retirement on October 23rd, 1983.  I rode the last ride behind 4877 as a teen.  A bittersweet memory. 

NJT was originally going to repaint 4876 into Tuscan Red as it actually wore that color in service, but it had been modified in the 60's with some high vents whereas 4877 had not.   

Sadly, this was the condition of 4876 in 2010 when I was last in Baltimore where it currently resides.

Thank you!  I am more concerned about heat and mold over mice. We don't have much in the way of rodents in my neighborhood.  The coyotes seem to also control the local stray cats too.   Most of the trains that have value are in the house, but it would be nice to simply have less "stuff".

When was that letter published?  I have been a member of the PRRT&HS for some time now and I seem to recall your note.  There was a time too when I recall that 4876 was possibly going to Harrisburg or York for preservation and cosmetic restoration.  I agree that 4876 is historically significant and should be preserved. 

Sadly 4800 isn't doing much better either, at least for now although outlook for preservation is much better at the moment.  This is one of my 2008 photos of 4800.

Yes Randy, as we've spoke about many times, the situation with GG1 #4876 is a sad one indeed.  I applaud your efforts to get some forward progress on getting this historic locomotive restored cosmetically.  It's such a waste as it just rusts away at the B&O Museum's yard.  This locomotive certainly made many runs through Baltimore over its' lifetime and on occasion served as the tunnel helper ( if my memory serves me correctly ) at Pennsylvania Station in Baltimore .. plus the Pennsy was one of the three major railroads to serve Baltimore for many decades.  The museum displays the Canton, Baltimore & Annapolis, Ma & PA, and Patapsco and Back Rivers locomotives, which is great because those roads all served Baltimore too once upon a time ( Canton still does ) ... and it would be nice to see Pennsy 4876 representing the Pennsy one day.  I'm sure the museum has its' financial/budgetary priorities with the 19th century B&O equipment restoration first, as it should.  Too bad the response to your letter was so few.

In your photo, your Lionel PW GG-1 looks as if its Brunswick Green paint is good. It probably only needs new striping and several new PRR keystones. I don't specifically know the source, but I have seen decals available for the striping and keystones before. Your paint appears to be intact and also the correct PRR dark green locomotive enamel (DGLE), a pot of black paint with a teaspoon of green mixed in.

In your photo, your Lionel PW GG-1 looks as if its Brunswick Green paint is good. It probably only needs new striping and several new PRR keystones. I don't specifically know the source, but I have seen decals available for the striping and keystones before. My wife and I took an overnight trip to Philly to see our new grand dog. In the lobby of the Logan Hotel was this picture that caught my eye…..Zoo Tower. I’ve passed it ( the real one) countless times going up and down the Northeast Corridor.
