Person Dies after being Hit by Train

Unfortunately suicide by train is all too common.  Ca lTrains which provides commuter service between San Francisco and San Jose CA (about 60 miles) reported hitting and killing 8 people between Jan 1 and Mar 30 this year.  Seven of these deaths were suicides.  One high school last year in the SF Bay Area had over 5 students commit suicide by train.

 

It is very sad for both the families and the train crews.

Happened on the Surfliner back in Jan when I was out there for a visit. Young girl walked in front of train at speed. 

Not to sound crass.......but the last act of a very troubled and selfish person. We were not on the train but friends were. Took 6 hours to clear things up and get them home. All that time and money spent........

Just saw another report, they said police were investigating the death as a suicide. That would be the second one in this area in a year.

 

More was just reported, the victim was a male in his 40's. Still a very sad thing, but at least it wasn't another young high school student.

Nowadays, with teenaqe suicides, you think drugs or bullying.  People who were along

on a murder, or were buddies of a perp commiting a crime, who is shot by the cops,

get charged for his buddy's murder.  Bullies should be charged with murder if their

harassment results in a suicide.

On private grade crossings about two miles apart, two people have gotten killed in

their cars, one driving out to his mailbox (across tracks) recently.  In prairie country

you see a lot of farms set back off the road, across railroad tracks on private drives.

Unusual for a girl to off herself in this manner. Usually, females are squeamish in how they try to check out, in that in many cases they really don't wanna go (often a cry for help) and can't grip the idea of looking awful once they're dead.

Women try suicide in orders of magnitude more than men, but men are far more successful as they usually choose very violent and quick ways to off themselves.

And I don't think its crass at all to refer to a suicide as a selfish act. If they stopped making such a big deal in schools when a kid killed themself, I'd bet it might cut back any others who only dwell on what a big deal someone will finally make of them, even in death, and think it's an acceptable option. If they didn't make a big deal at all and literally bury the remains as if nothing happened, I'm certain that would curtail at least a few others from copying the act...

In agreement, I always thought Cleopatra's legendary means of checking out less likely, but the different choices of Hitler and his consort "typical".  But people don't

always adhere to stereotypes, and in today's drug-addled society, a lot of things not

the "norm", if there is one,  are seen.

A year or so, a young girl stepped in front of an NS freight at a crossing up the hill above the high school. In the same area is a cross where a guy killed himself. Ugly.

Very common occurrence in Southern California... male and female. Just a couple weeks ago we had a guy jump off the bridge on the east end of the yard. He landed on the yard lead and died a few hours later. A few hours later a guy stepped out in front of an east bound train... obviously was killed within a few seconds. Unfortunately our crews see it all too often.

PALO ALTO (CBS SF) — A Caltrain struck and killed a 15-year-old Palo Alto High School student in Palo Alto Monday morning.

Northbound train No. 309 fatally struck the person at about 6:25 a.m. on the tracks south of Churchill Avenue. A preliminary investigation determined the case is a suicide, according to Caltrain officials.

The fatality initially shut down Caltrain service in both directions. The southbound tracks reopened around 7:15 a.m. and trains single-tracked through the area.

Caltrain service resumed in both directions as of about 9 a.m.

The fatality is the eighth on Caltrain’s right-of-way so far in 2015. There were 10 in all of 2014, eight of which were determined to be suicides, agency officials said.

Over 36,600 Americans died in motor vehicle accidents in 2010, while nearly 5,000 more — nearly 38,400 — died by suicide, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Here are some of the warning signs of suicide:

• Talking about wanting to die or to kill oneself.
• Looking for a way to kill oneself, such as searching online or buying a gun.
• Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live.
• Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain.
• Talking about being a burden to others.
• Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs.
• Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly.
• Sleeping too little or too much.
• Withdrawing or feeling isolated.
• Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge.
• Displaying extreme mood swings.
