Trees and I would say that the photo chain game has completely gone off the tracks.

Agreed. If you want to post your random photos, might I suggest doing so in "a picture a day"? Sorry if I contributed to the problem in my most recent addition; I was only making a link to the last photo I saw in the thread.

Now back to our regularly scheduled programming, please.

I'm with Bill. Each photo should link (hence Chain) in some way to the photo before it. We can do it, just think about it when you post.

Yeah, that's why I no longer post on this thread. So many people just pick what they want to emulate, which null and voids the entire concept.

Also, posting photos of real trains, in my mind, sort of nulls the whole thing as well, but that's just me...

I was hoping it wasn't the case anymore, but I still look at the thread and see it happens even more these days.

Greg's original post to start this game was very clear and was a great idea: https://ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/topic/photo-chain-game

Straighten me out then, fellas, as I am positive you will not hesitate to do.

If we held strictly to that precept, on this page, 88, as an example, then looking back at the post showing a diner, every post reply would have to be featuring a diner. How would we go anywhere else, then? The post showing Gilly's Switch Tower, and Arnold's featuring signs, and mine showing more locomotives would be offenders of the sacred rule, and would merit removal. Well, if you say so, I will do so immediately that I hear from you.

Apparently, then, I mistakenly misunderstood that the "link" among the "chain" was the enjoyment of sharing photos, along the line, which reminded each of us of a particular feature among our own creative efforts in our hobby. Also, we are not all able to stay glued to this thread, nor the Forum, every minute of the day, nor over a couple days' time period, so we might easily come across a posting that interested us, once we were aboard again, quite beyond when it appeared along the chain; hence, we would, of necessity, be posting a photo that was at a precise spot along the line, BUT in keeping the the spirit of the thread - sharing related details, when we were able to post. No?

If that should be the case, JohnH, where would your posting of the diner fit-in along said chain, leading up to the top of this page, since it does not follow any diner photo posted anywhere along the entirety of page 87 ?

Go ahead. You can do it. Enlighten us.

Maybe it would help if I explained my last above post about train signs as an example.

My train signs post was in response to the post immediately before that, which showed a switch tower. However, if you look extremely closely at that switch tower post, you will see the top of a tiny Yard Limit sign. That is why  my post had 2 small train signs in it, one of which says Reduce Speed.

Another thing I do when I post a photo is to pick one that has at least several other interesting things in it besides the feature that connects it to the prior photo. For instance, in my train signs photo, there is an oil Derrick, a freight station and a little man standing on that station waving his hand at the viewer, among other things. That gives the next poster some things to connect his photo to mine.

My point in explaining the above it is that a Forum member can easily miss the connection to the chain, unless they look very carefully at the photo in the prior post.

I agree with Moonson (Frank) that it would be best not to be strict about requiring a photo that one posts relate to the photo in the post immediately prior. As Frank said, it would be impossible for most of us to be glued to this topic 24/7.  My suggestion is to encourage having one's photo connect to a photo in the last several that were posted, but not to be critical if that doesn't happen.

IMO, we should keep in mind that new participants in the Photo Chain may not yet know the protocol here. Let's be kind to them.

In my defense, the last post on 87 was by Arnold, with a diner in it. Also, you don't need to be glued to this thread 24/7, you just need to look at the current post to come up with a chain link.

You do not need any defense sir.

However, that post by Arnold was not about the diner. He focused our attention, in both posts with that diner in them on that page, on a coke machine and on a jukebox, each positioned in front of the diner in separate pictures for us to enjoy. He mentioned them, not the diner. We reacted to all of it, as did you. The diner was the backdrop, but either way, it was nice to see your post following them featuring your diner. That , to me, was in the spirit of this thread = sharing creativity and ideas, featuring a whole variety of items, from time to time, inviting  interaction from our fellow hobbyists according to our own inspiration and creativity.

BTW, Arnold and I, and Jim Battaglia had posted pictures of diners on page 86, so you had good precedent for your posting your diner, provided we are going to loosen-up a bit and allow/welcome some creativity among responses that might reach back a way along this thread, too, right?

Nope. The next picture should have almost anything BUT a diner in it. Look at the picture and the link is something else that is also in that picture. There's a lot to choose from in John H's picture at the top of this page. There is a lighted sign, a road with double yellow lines, a van, parking places, rock wall, covered hopper in the background.....

True, as did FRANKTRAIN drawing our attention to the light present in that diner scene, using that facet to show us his marvelous vignette bathed in light.

I'm going to allow myself to be guided and instructed by your very interesting interpretation of all that the scene with the diner present made available to us. Your interpretation will now be my guide if I elect to share further here. Thank you for opening my eyes further, sir. I think your broader interpretation is marvelous.

Understood, of course.

I just enjoy looking beyond the most current post to see what I may have missed previously and want to applaud by posting a scene tied to it, like this one, reaching back and connecting to a post Arnold made in this page, of "Train Signs"...IMG_9498_edited-1

(P.S. Yes, I had counted the number of figures I had affixed to the layout by that time.)
