This coming Friday (11/24/17) marks the opening night for Kennywood Park's annual Holiday Lights event.  This year marks a big change for us in that our layout is now in a new location (the Arcade Building) and TWICE as big as those of previous years.  It occupies roughly a 42' x 50' area and is done in the shape of a big "U".  We normally have a time frame of around 3 weeks to set up, but this year we only had 1 week due to the work being done to install heat in the building.  Work began this past Wednesday, and as of Sunday night is 99% finished.  We were in high gear the whole time with all hands on deck at one time or another, including our two junior members.  Here are the photos from setup:

By Friday night it was beginning to look like a layout!

As of Sunday night, we are 99% finished (not too bad for five days' work ):

During the test runs on the track, a train running at a good pace took more than four minutes to make a complete run around the whole layout.  Needless to say, we are all really excited and are ready to go!

I will post more photos throughout the event.

Andy

Hi Andy, Having been a Miller Ave boy (just across the bridge), and having worked as a teenager as busboy and salad-boy at the Cafeteria (1960-62), where you have been setting up the display in the past, Kennywood certainly has a big place in my heart, so hearing about your club's presentations in Kennywood have always had my rapt attention, that's for sure. Thanks for posting this latest adventure and for promising updates. I'd be especially interested in hearing your estimation of how well the layout is attended and received by adults as well as children.

Thanks again for this thread.

FrankM

P.S. Here's how the Penny Arcade looked in 1957, when we Holy Name students were at Kennywood for a Safety Patrol Boys outing.

Have someone take a good number of hi-res photos (not to be published elsewhere) and I will be happy to consider this layout for presentation in the magazine in our Dec. 2018 issue. We are in a transition phase at the magazine now, but you can reach me via the same e-mail address (in my profile here and in the magazine). Phone service at my home office not yet established, but I will notify the forum when that is done (around the end of this month).

Allan, That would be great if you are able to publish some photographs next Christmas issue!  Andy is up to the challenge on photography!  (Andy, please excuse me butting in!). These gents do a great job with so many shows in the Pittsburgh area, I would love to see them get some national/international recognition!  In my opinion, their modular layout is THE highlight of every show they participate in!!

Mark, I'm flattered, but I don't think my little point-and-shoot camera is up to taking photos of high enough quality for print publication.  One of our junior members (Keith6700) has volunteered to take and submit photos to OGR, so I think we have that base covered.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Just cleared the sd cards for tomorrow. Hopefully tomorrow anyway. I'm real excited, this'll be a fun season.

Alan, I'll get you some pics within the next couple weeks.

Happy thanksgiving!
