Since I replaced the motor and traction tires on my 1225, the E-unit has begun behaving oddly:

1) It defaults to reverse when at rest for a few moments.

2) When the whistle switch is pushed, all power to the motor is cut until the switch is released.  It does this with or without the tender.

Any ideas?

This makes me worry its something else too.

The reversing motor seems easy enough, but the motor leads are isolated anyhow, right? So why the whistle drop out?

Maybe a repair with a transistor that seemed compatible by spec, but actually needed to be in a reversed position for installation.

A bad transistor in the engine.

A bad transformer whistle switch.

A bad rectifying diode in the engine?
