I have had intermittent problems with the engine running after only about 10 hours of operation from new.  The engine would light and the tender would make steam sounds but it would not move.  Was first told that it was a circuit board problem by local service technician.  I sent it to Lionel and they said it was a grounding problem which they supposedly fixed.  It ran very briefly then stopped and has not run since.  I spoke with Lionel Rep today at York TCA and he was Zero help.  He stated that the circuit board was probably not available and that it could not be repaired.  I confirmed that the board was not available with Lionel Service Dept. Has any one else experienced this issue with the Lion Chief sets and is this now a "throw away" or can it be repaired?

The 620-8653-100 is a DC motor with a flywheel and leads. As such, you can't connect it directly to an AC transformer (the circuit board changes the AC to speed controlled DC). You can hook up a DC power supply to the leads (disconnected from the board) to test the motor. By the way, the motor is listed as available on the lionelsupport.com website as well.
