Finally have my layout ready for traditional operation, Gargraves track, switches, etc. Postwar 736 (just serviced) will pull only two or three light freight cars. Hooked up a 726E, pulls like a champ. While firebox glow is interesting, I want smoke. Do I need to obtain a different loco? (Layout is at Phase II, running post war.) Next is remote control, but would like to run postwar for awhile. Add weight (wheels did spin a bit early on)? Wheels right now are clean & shiny--any suitable chemical to add grip? Other advice?  Thanks, Alan

The 226E is a parallel plate motor.  I doubt your problem is a thrust washer. I would check to see how much wear there is in the various bushings including the axle bushings. Also check the condition of the commutator and brushes. If nothing jumps out at you, trying running it without the side and drive rods. Could be a wheel loose on the axle allowing the wheel to get out of quarter a little.
