Have any of you repainted an engine?  I know some are down on repainting but some trains are just not that valuable or collectable.  I have a few Marx 1095 Santa Fe F3 diesels and most were not very pretty with the silver being unpainted plastic and the red being poorly masked sprayed a dull red.  So I got out the spray paint and did a ABA set.  I should have used a dull Testors silver.  I never could afford the Lionel F3 ABA and it is kind of big for my 027 tracks and Marx switches I keep telling myself.

Picking up the Santa Fe decals made the job easier.

Lets see what you have done.

thanks Charlie. if viewed in person you can tell the diesels were made from combining badly damaged shells. i have units to do a Canadian Pacific ABA someday. the FW&WR was done with a nice piece to start with. looking for another engine & tender to letter for Virginia Truckee.

Steve

I had a 1688E I was planning on doing that exact same thing with Steve. Never got around to it though, the shell is still sitting in my closet. Nice to get a good look at what it could look like though!

So far I only have 1 tinplate locomotive (out of 2 working ones that I own) that I've repainted, as seen on an earlier thread.

This was a junker 1688 shell. It has been repainted along with a spare tender. It is also re motored with a Marx 333 smoking motor. I still need to order new nameplates for the sides.

As a 3/16ths O lovin' guy, I have to say that's one well done bash!  The Marx mechanism looks like it was designed to go under that shell - did you have to do much work to fit them together?

I enjoy looking at the repaints. I've been searching for a few Std Gauge as well as O-Gauge power units to redo. I own many original Std & O-Gauge that I inherited from my grandpa. Most of these still have their original boxes.

I've bought a few pieces from others that have been redone. I run these more and more. My favorite Std Gauge passenger cars are the very early 32, 35 & 36. The #'s 33, 38, 50, 8, 10 & 318 are my favorite Std Gauge Electric units.

Please keep the photos coming. I need ideas of where to go & what to do.

It wasn't too hard once I quit procrastinating. I used heavy sheet brass to make a rear motor mount that is screwed to the cab floor. You can see the holes, but the screws for the front mount were not in it when I took the photo being as I'm not done. If you will notice the tear drop shaped smoke stack opening. I cut it out because the smoke unit opening on the Marx motor was a little bit further back, but if I moved the assembly any more forward, the pilot trucks would bind with the shells pilot. I started this project to give my set of streamlined U&R Mfg PRR coaches some motive power.

bought a postwar Lionel 2018 at a train meet for $18.

No tender. looked like somebody had tried to paint it with

a paint brush. It was a hack job. Strip the old paint and repaint

with "Ballet Slipper" pink. right outta the spray can.

Had many at shows ask me if it was a real girls train, even had

someone make me an offer on it. NOT FOR SALE!!

Charlie, Floquil makes a color called "Old Silver", which you can mix with either flat or gloss coat, or 50/50 for semi gloss. I had a friend use it on a Burlington 44 tonner, and it came out really well.

Steve, is that a William Crooks repainted? I have a customer that has one with a broken roof support, it is a wind up and is OK otherwise. It has the tin tender in good shape, but your repaint makes me brave enough to tackle it.

Luke
Yes it is a Marx Wm Crooks.I changed the smoke stack to a straight one and the tender now carries coal instead of wood. Just wanted it to be a little different.

Here's my repainted Marx 999. Not just a repaint, but also a reworked pilot to liven the front up a bit, not to trick people into thinking it's a rare closed spoke engine. Also added sand pipes, just because I could. The tender is a former 4 wheel 7" item. Looks good on the point of a Marx 3/16" scale tin train.

Wow! I always thought the Marx 591 was a homely little thing, but a bit of TLC and a real pilot truck makes a BIG difference!

Been kinda thinking of doing a Southern styled 666. Yours looks pretty good!

Thanks! The conversion's pretty easy. Hardest part was hacksawing off the original axle mounts and filing the cut edge flush with the rest of the frame. I used the same holes the couplers were riveted in to mount the trucks.

I did the PRR Merch car and it turned out pretty nice.

You guys must get to the shows before me a lot of times. Sometimes those boxes of junk I find really are junk (even by my standards) by the time I get to look through them!  lol

Andy, I'm also one of those guys that loves junk!  There ain't much I won't take home   Those rusty Red 600/601/602 cars turned into the Orange and Blue cars for my home brewed Lionel Corp passenger set.

Here's a Williams SD45 shell in a color scheme I developed for the Gadsden Pacific Lines, home railroad of the Gadsden Pacific Toy Train Museum. I wanted something that expressed the color palette of our desert environment in Southern Arizona. I call this color scheme Desert Tan and Red Rock. The shell is going to stay like this until I get some decals made for it, so I can add the decals and clear coat before I install the handrails.

The SD45 shell was a challenge to mask because of all the panels and louvers on the side. It's very difficult to mask those small grooves. It was a learning experience and I will know how to do better on the masking next time. This was also the first time I used my new Paasche VLS airbrush. I love it - it's 1000 per cent better than the old Aztek.

Keep the pictures coming. Repainting ole black engines is real fun.

Painting Diesels is fun too.

This is Marx 1998 engine motor and frame with cut down Lionel SW-1 switcher body painted in B&N colors (Bauxite & Northern, sub of Alcoa in Bauxite, Arkansas).

It is a custom job with Lionel coupling on the rear and Marx coupling on the front to allow switching both types of cars.

The L&N RR had a couple of F-3A units before they bought several F-7s. The A-B-B-A “Black Cats” were used for pulling coal through eastern Kentucky circa 1948.

These Williams models began as Denver Rio Grande. ERR electronics control lights, sounds, couplers, and locomotion. Besides adding dual headlights, the hard part was filling and smoothing the three large holes in back of the shells. Can you see the engineer and fireman within the detailed interior? They are best when viewed pulling several black and yellow L&N coal hoppers.

Should I weather them?

Wow Pat, nice!!  How did you paint the frame without removing the driving wheels (and without getting paint in the wheel bearings!?)

Ted, I have access to a hot black oxide tank, so the chassis was dipped, wheels and all. Some of the small parts I did a cold black oxide treatment here at my house.....there’s no paint on the chassis. I don’t really care if the bearings an axles turn black too. It certainly isn’t going to hurt them.......Pat

A few of mine from days past.  Got lots of projects on the boards, but no time to do them.

Williams Genesis with homemade decals and the front truck moved forward for a more prototypical appearance.

Retired, 3497B862-2890-4223-B36C-725F32184A77The red American Flyer wide gauge 4683 was a basket  case when I received it. Ray Sorensen of Greer, South Carolina restored it for me a couple of years ago. He stripped it, rebuilt the drive, rewired, polished the brass and enameled the exterior.  It looks great and runs like it is new just out of the Flyer Chicago plant.  His email is lion5342@hotmail.com. He has done several other engines and passenger cars for me with great results. I highly recommend him.

The American Flyer 4683 on the bottom shelf was bought in an auction.  There is a TCA restoration  sticker on the  bottom indicating that it was restored by an O Arnston. He did a fine job.  It is also a great runner and has the working bell mechanism.

I did not remember I stated this topic on 3-12-2012 !

Coolhand:   Welcome to OGR forum and thanks for resurrecting this old but good topic.  It has gotten lots of interest since you posted.

Here is my most fun repaint jobs as it really took a lousy looking General 4-4-0 and made it presentable.

I started with cheap Lionel General 4-4-0, 8005 dc powered set with coal tender and Lionel 9541 Santa Fe Railway Agency Express Passenger car.  I added a full wave rectifier and changed the Lionel 8005 to ac operation although in one direction.  A selector switch was added for manual reversal.  The engine was dressed up with gold stripping, a lighted head light and painting all red engine black for the boiler and stack.

A fuzzy picture of Lionel 8005 before painting and dressing up! Ponc. Train show & stuff 3-5-2016 038

The Lionel 8005 was painted, along with the red and silver front wheels and painted domes.  The body and stack were painted Black.  Gold stripping was added to dress up.  Much more beautiful ! Train -General 4-1-2016 005

Now that I have two Lionel General 4-4-0 locos, I can simulate The Great Locomotive Chase of the Civil War between the General and the Texas.  The Disney movie “The Great Locomotive Chase” is a good train movie to watch and the kids will enjoy it too.Train -General 4-1-2016 003
