Along the topic of oddities of a 2332 GG1, I recently picked one up in a collection of Lionel track, engines (2343ABA, 2332GG1, a 726 & tender), 3 Madison series passenger cars, 2 boxes full of O gauge steel tubular track, numerous remote 022 switches, a ZW250W, and 2 RW transformers and a dozen rolling stock cars. This 2332- GG1 is the dark green paint (missing the pantographs) and needs some work to the e-unit switch (loose).

Question: This GG1 has absolutely no evidence of ever being or having stripes or writing on the sides other than the red keystone decal on the upper side. From what I’ve found online I’ve seen conflicting statements that all had 3 or 5 stripes except for a topic in another model railroad magazine where the lack of stripes was questioned by one of their subscribers and numerous answers to that posting. 3FA38FC3-4A2B-4309-9704-EE29C4514B9F6A7E94DB-B047-49D7-8B16-2272AB25CFC2F4B362F9-3214-45BD-B18E-0EC143A59C3F

Thoughts? Suggestions? Ideas?

Thank you for any/all input.

@franktrain  Your’s are nice looking and in great shape.  The items I picked up the other day I picked up for a little over $250.  The ZW and one of the RW work great although the ZW does need a new cord.  The one RW will also need a cord as it’s been cut.

As to the stripes on the 2332, the other article I read, and according to Tandems site, all of them had stripes.  The other article claimed ‘all 2332s had either 3 or 5 painted stripes or striped decals which should have left some sort of decal residue if removed, and the painted stripes should be there at some place on the body somewhere.’  No decal residue or hint of faded painted stripes or numbers on this one anywhere.  🙄

I noticed in the pics of your’s appears to have no striping like the one I picked up.

Thank you for your input.

@KOOLjock11  Thank you for your input too Jon. That was part of why I posted my question.  Tandem said all were 5 stripes in either gold or silver, stamped or decals depending upon variation and year of manufacture.

One of the sites (I don’t remember now exactly which one) had stated that said the striping and numbers were gold or silver, 3 or 5, stamped or decals until they went to a single stripe (wasn’t notated as to painted or decal for the single stripe/numbers).

Just trying to narrow down to exactly what year this one is.

@Joe Krasko  Thank you for your input.  I’m not sure what I’m going to do with this one. I purchased the items mainly for the ZW, O22 switches, and the post war 2343 ABA (which operates perfectly) to see if it was in better shape than what I have. The GG1, 726 and matching 2426W tender and Madison passenger cars (kind of tough shape cosmetically) were bonuses when I went to look at the collection as they weren’t pictured in the ad when I saw it.

In my very humble opinion and NOT looking to start anything, the GG1 is so ugly it’s almost cute.  😊   Wouldn’t want 12, would you? Lol

The camera sees everything! Zooming in and looking closely at the area below the cab window, I can see the ghosts of five stripes. No color, just five areas of less-oxidized green paint, rather like worn lettering on real railroad equipment.

Like the majority of GG-1s, the lower stripe (or two) cuts across the ladder. In earliest production, the stripes were higher, but they were moved down to avoid the complex curves on the ends of the locomotive.
