I recently had to restring a Lionel 6660 Derrick car, and am not certain whether I got it right.
The car has two lines, one goes to the hook, and the second one goes to the boom to adjust it's height (angle).

Here is the question: Should the line to the boom be threaded through the eyelet at the base of the mast, or does the line go directly from the crank to the dummy pulley at the top of the mast?

As suggested, here are some pictures.
The first two are of the derrick assembly from A 175 rocket launcher. It was missing the strings when I picked it up. It has the same derrick assembly as the 6660 / 6670 crane, so I assume it was intended to be strung the same way.
The second two photos are of a 6660 crane. The seller thought it had been restrung.
As one can see, if the line to the boom does not go through the eyelet, then it rubs on the bottom brace of the mast.

Which way did these items leave the factory?

I can't say for sure 100%, but I would think both lines goes through the eyelet.

But Some could have slipped through the production line with only 1 line going through the eyelet. Some employee had to thread those lines all day!

I can't tell for sure, but in your last picture, the line going to the hook looks like only a single line, as if the line is tied off at the hook instead of wrapping around the pulley

and back up to the boom with a large knot.

Both strings did not go through the eyelet of either.

I had both the launcher(still do) and derrick (just a flat car now)

As a boy this was a hot poker to my OCD.

I did not like the string on the rail!

Running them both in the hole, one string can cross over the other, and hold that line, keeping it from dropping down, as its reel is unwound.
