I have small 7X11 layout (2 independent but connected loops) with multiblocks, 5 track powered switches and 5 manual.  All AC operating accessories and lighted (LEDS) are powered by separate transformer and a DC power pack.  Track power for conventional operation is via 2  Z 1000 transformers.

Currently thinking of LC+ and if I were totally going that route, I believe I would treat the layout as one operating block.  However, on the question of power, would one Z1000 be sufficient to power 2 LC+ smaller (camelback and yard.switcher diesel) locos or would a PH-180 be a better choice for the one block layout.

I realize I can have my cake and eat it too by retaining the block system and having have one Z 1000 for conventional operation and the other for an LC+.   I might consider that route but would prefer to avoid a mix of LC+ and conventional.  A toggle switch would route power from the PH-180 or the Z 1000s

Thoughts on the need for a PH-180 for LC+ in the above scenario.

Thanks

If you're already set up with the blocks, there isn't really any point of changing things, just turn the throttle all the way up on the Z1k and you're good to go on whichever track the LionChief engine is on.  If the LC engine will be crossing between blocks, make sure the throttle on both transformers is set to the same level.

On the PH180, I think this is the best power source on the market right now.  (ZW-L excluded; It is probably better than the PH180, but is not very cost effective)  A single Z1000 will run 2 LC+ engines just fine, a PH180 however provides almost twice the power of a Z1000 and offers a much better circuit breaker...

In the end, I think your best corse of action is to keep everything set up as is.  The two Z1000s will provide the same power as one PH180.  Park your conventional engines on sidings, or remove them from the track, turn up the throttles on the Z1ks, and have fun running LC+.

IRELAND,

I do not remember exactly how much voltage a Z-1000 delivers to the tracks when the Transformer is turned up to the max, remember however the LC & LC+ engines are to be run 18V and under, or they can be damaged, according to the Lionel directions, that come with these type of engines.  Set your Transformer up to deliver just under the 18V, to safe guard your engines, no matter which Transformer you decide to use.
