OH The "Chrome" finish.  Did not recall that tis finish was used on any of the Amfleet cars.

Several years ago when Mike was here someone in the group brought up this finish.  Mike stated that it turned out to be a real bear.  That even the very smallest blemish on a plastic shell would telegraph through the finish and be magnified.  He said the reject rate was extreme.

So I guess MTH backed off any broad use of the finish.

I acquired the 65142 and 65143 sets some time ago.  They are the original plating and came with passengers in them.  I think they look delightful, though I do wish they were full size.

I have several MTH AMTRAK AEM-7 locomotives in the painted finish and also bought one that was plated. I think the painted finish looks much closer to the real thing. To me, the plated finish was much too shiny and toy-like. Same goes for the Amfleet passenger cars.

Good evening MELGAR:

I completely agree with you on the AEM7s.  They never were that shiny, even brand new.  The Amfleets however I thought looked quite nice with the plating, and IMHO the Amfleet in the image below looks very similar to the MTH plating.

The first runs of the cars had the dull finish and couplers that were not the best.  A few years back, MTH put out plated cars the same time as the plated AEM-7.  The Flying Yankee was also plated.  The plated cars are not bad as I see many of the real cars each day.

I live a few blocks from the Boston to New York main line.  My railroad also has a large number of the plated cars.  I have two more  sets that I have not opened yet.  THey will be pulling into South Station shortly.

BTW, this is real plating on the cars.  You can confirm that by hitting the car body with your continuity meter.  The real deal.
