Yep the switches and Marx tower were with my grandfather's set, so l pulled them out. Don't not want to spend a ton of money on new Lionel switches

Now that's nice. I love old trains. No doubt that one graced more than a couple of Christmas trees (or was around at Chanukah.)
Most of the time, the old ones run right out of the box (or bag.) Of course, our having an in-house mechanic doesn't hurt

My grandfather only ran it at Christmas I think
It does look like your grandfather ran the 229 only at Christmas as it still is in decent shape after 74 years. Most old trains of this vintage are very well used & beat up. Have fun.
