So I recently picked up this locomotive which I believe has never been run before. Anyways, I put it onto the track, all the lights and sounds come on and the smoke unit works as it should. I am running it in conventional mode. I turn on and off the throttle to change direction but the only thing that changes is the way the smoke unit it putting out smoke, solid, puffing, then solid again (I am assuming representing forward neutral and reverse).

The "reverse" switch has been turned on and off to see if either or makes a difference and I installed the optional 9v battery. Still, the locomotive will not move. Any thoughts about what might be wrong?

check the position of your switches when you remove the smoke unit.  Check the Reverse switch, It is mislabeled and is actually the program run switch make sure it is in the on position.  If you open it up, be careful, there are a lot of small fragile parts, make sure the R2LC board is properly seated.  That might be the problem with the pulsating smoke.

Some K-Line cruise boards would not move in conventional.  Work fine in TMCC.  You would need a TMCC set up and reprogram the ID and reset feature and test it.  Then switch back to conventional.  You can also try swapping out the R2LC.  Also try unplugging motor connections and reinstalling.  Can be lots of different things and some engines do not come out of long term storage very well due to contact corrosion on the boards.  You can inspect the motor driver to see if it has visible burned damage.  G
