Hi,

I just recently bought a MTH Premier SD40-2, I got it out and put it on the test track and when to add the locomotive. It added to the DCS system but it will not start up. I powered it up in conventional and it works fine. I also reset the features settings and back to factory default and added the engine again and still no start up. I thought maybe it was the battery, so I changed it out and still the same out come.

Does anyone have any idea what I should do next?

Any help is appreciated.

Sorry I thought I put that in there, This is a Proto 2 with a 3 volt board aor 2.8v.

It will not start up nothing with the couplers and only the front lights come on, the rear number boards do not light up either. I will try a conventional reset with the 1 horn and 5 bells to see it that helps.

Also it does not move either.

Give this one a try     Menu/Advanced/ Reset engine/ Feature reset....  If a no go

delete it from the remote and start over. If it runs fine in conventional hopefully there's not too much wrong with the engine..... Are you using a track with a good dcs signal  with  no other engines receiving power anywhere.

GREGG,

i did a conventional reset and it looked like some it reset I have number boards on the rear of the unit. I did the Feature Reset, no go, so I reset the engine to Factory Default and added the engine again and it loaded fine. Still no start up, no directional switch, couplers still do not work. I figured what the heck with out deleting the engine again to try adding it again and it added again to a different address still not luck.

This is being done on a isolated 30" piece of track completely isolated from the layout and other locomotives as well.

It's from around 2004.   as   far as I can tell it's strictly a 3 rail engine..  Hang in there. Maybe  one  of the techs can get you fixed up.

Since it runs ok in conventional I'm still leaning to sound file re-load  but only if you're comfortable doing it.   Wait a couple of days for more replies.  You do have the red out put from the tiu channel to the center rail? You wouldn't be able to add the engine if you didn't.

Well Good news! I had similar problems in the past and so I removed some engines from my Remote and tried it again and this time it took address 7 and fired right up, everything works. Then the front truck would not move so I took it apart and found ballast in the gears so after I cleaned that out and gave it a fresh grease and oiling everything is working fine. I still think there may be a loose wire I could have sworn I moved a wire and it flickered, I will  have to do alittle more  digging but if it doesn't throw any more fits I may just button it back up.

I am still operating DCS with the 2003 software, would it help if I upgraded it to 5.0? Maybe then I will not have these issues of deleting engines so others can be added?

Thanks for your Help GREGG!

It may be time to upgrade...?      Yep       however y ou still may have had to delete and add again...  Some of the engine   and lash-up info was stored in the tiu but moved over to the remote with later versions of the software. If you purchase a proro-3 engine  it , s a must. Go for it....although things don't always go as planned (downloading new software) with dcs, it   keeps you on your toes and interesting.
