I've got a PS 3 ES44AC CR 8098 engine that I can not get started.  I was running engine out of the yard when it stalled on a switch and shut down.  I pushed the engine back a few inches to get it restarted.  The engine remained dead and would not restart.  All I get is "out of rf range" and "engine not on track.

I tried to do a features reset and factory reset and got nothing.

I've also tried the horn bell routine with the transformer.

In the past if an engine stalled and I moved it forward or backwards it would start up and when I hit start on the remote all was well.  This time nothing.  There was power on the track and I'm running 5.0 for now.

Thanks

Joe

Will the engine run under DC power?

Is it at all possible that you somehow moved the DCS / DCC switch to the DCC position?  If that occurred the engine will not respond to DCS input and you will receive "Engine Not on Track" every time you use the remote under DCS.  This just happened to me with a PS3 engine last week.

Regards, Rick

when you power it up in conventional mode with out TIU, what is the current draw on the z4000 transformer, does it draw any current at all. ?

Have you taken the engine apart and checked that all connector plugs on all modules PS 3 are securely plugged in! if all the connectors are plugged in and still no current draw at all I would say the board is DEAD!

great the I would now try a conventional reset with transformer only. power up to around 10 volts and then wait a minute or so. the 1 W 5B in I second intervals, if reset works you'll get 2 whistle toot's. if that happens then power down an power up again and try running the engine in convention, using the direction button !

Sounds like there might be hope yet !

also the 1 whistle and five bells must be done in 1 second interval's or it will not work, you might have to play with it to get it.

Good luck!

George,

Needs to be powered off Fixed 1

Actually, it can be on any powered channel that has a DCS signal.

However, the TIU must be DCS ID #1.

This and a whole lot more is all in MTH’s “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition", available for purchase  from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!

Barry, I try to keep it simple in case Aux power not used.  So I recommend Fix 1, but good point must be TIU #1 also.

Does this TIU work with other engine.  If so this is an engine issue.  May have wire bundle too close to signal transformer on the board killing DCS signal.

If it fully functions in conventional, but won't load to DCS with a system that does work with other engines it is time to take the shell off and inspect the wire bundle.  Remove the 40 pin connector by the connector carefully (DO NOT pull on the wires).  Inspect the pins and reseat fully.  Make sure wire bundle is not near the small toroid with 4 legs near the 8 pin connector.  Move any wires up and away to prevent interference with DCS signal, and try again to load it.  G

I finally got it to work in DCS mode.  Here's what happened, engine would not start in DCS, with one remote I tried to recover engine and got no engine to recover.  I deleted the engine from the remote and tried to add a new MTH engine and got no engine to add.  I then took another remote tonight that had that engine in address 56.  I tried to add that engine again in the remote that already had at address 56.  It added the engine to address 59.  I tried to start up and it did start up and ran like it should with sounds and effects in address 59.  I then deleted the engine at address 56 and moved the engine from address 59 to address 56 and everything seems to be ok now.

I want to thank everyone for their comments and help in this issue.  I haven't run into anything like this in the past but only have a couple PS 3 engines if that has anything to do with anything.

Although I am not happy with MTH and version 5.0 I love DCS to run my trains.

Joe
