I just called Dennis at Z-Stuff about programming my 2500 switch machines. He said that you had to have a data wire attached to your switch machine and then to a data driver #2001 Z-Stuff. If you are using TMCC use data driver version A and if you are using Legacy make sure that you are using #2001 Z-Stuff data driver version L.

Must have missed the memo on this. I'm running non-Legacy stuff off the SER2 on my test layout and using an older version of the DZ-2001 with no problems. Not going to switch now, but I do need to find out what version L is providing that makes it better than A.
I missed it as well. I have had intermittent issues, so maybe. I plan on asking Dennis at York. The only thing I suspect is that the pinouts on the 9 pin D connectors on the bases are different. Like you I'm using a SER2.

It is an isolated photodiode/transistor circuit and the photo diode current limiting resistor was originally 110 ohms. Z Stuff changed that to 390 ohms to decrease the load on the Legacy base output. The Legacy base is a real RS232 output and does not have a lot of drive power. Often the DZ data driver and a TPC is too much for it. Lionel recently came out with the LCS system and the SER2 module which provides a much stiffer output circuit for driving things like the DZ data driver and TPCs, etc.
Looks like that answers my question; with the SER2 you don't need the 2001-L version.
Begs the question-will the L version work with the SER2?
