I am in the process of doing the PS3 upgrade to a Santa Fe F-3 Passenger.  When I go to the website to look at sound files, I see "Protosound Upgrade" and "Protosound 3".  Am I correct in thinking the Protosound 3 is the one to download?  The website does not tell the difference.

The upgrade sound files are intended to work with the 3 volt PS2 or the PS32 board while the "regular" sound file is intended for the "standard" PS3 board.

However, either file may work with either board. Just be sure to install any associated chain file, as well.

Now I have something to absorb.  You confused me when you said Protosound 3 upgrade.  The 2 choices were "protosound 3"  or "protosound upgrade".  You said to use the "Protosound 3 upgrade".  I assume "Protosound 3".  I did not see a choice for a chain file.  To be specific I am going to download the sound files for:

20-20622-1. When I tried the download before it only gave me a choice to send an *.mth file to the engine.

Barry, I forgot to ask.  Will a chain file automatically download when .mth file is downloaded.  I assume the .mth is sound only, not “chain file.

PS-3 Diesel upgrade kits are true PS-3 and you should find a PS-3 engine similar to the model you have and load the complete PS-3 sound file and chain file.  This gives you all the characteristics.

PS-3 Steam upgrade is different, and not a true PS-3.  So you must leave the PS-32 steam chain file in it.

PS-32 repairs are different.  I do not want you to get confused by all the info.

Since your doing a PS-3 Diesel upgrade to a F-3 follow my first sentence.  G

I could see why this could be confusing to anyone new to upgrading. The problem is the links title.

"Protosound Upgrade".  "Protosound ?????what?????? Upgrade".

Well, If you read the UG instructions (who does?) it clearly tells you to load a PS-3 sound file, like 6 times.  Not an upgrade sound file.  The PS UG links are the old upgrade links for PS-2 3V and also are used for PS-2 5V repairs with the PS-2 3V and now the PS-32 boards. G

I will read the UG instructions.  I must have missed the part where it says to “ load 6 times” per your quote.  I would think 1 time would do it.  I will follow your advise and do it 6 times.  Is 7 too much and 5 too little.

I sincerely hope I did not offend with my sarcastic 6 or 7 times.  The root of the question was the upgrade or PS3.  On could assume that the Protosound upgrade kit might be different then factory equipped boards.  That made me wonder if the PS3 was to reload a factory equipped that already had the file.  Since the kit is an upgrade one might think that the Protosound upgrade would require the upgrade load. I wish that MTH would make it clearer.  Some food for thought for MTH for dummies like me. My apologies to Dave.  It has been a bit frustrating.  I should have sent it out to be done by an authorized service center.

I answered you question sincerely, and I was being funny with Dave not you.  It can be confusing to a new person, but this question has been answered correctly many times before.  A search will find it, plus I believe the locked reference post also talk about it.

Unfortunately Dave post has no value to your question, and those upgrade SF can't be removed because they are needed for repairs of PS-2 5V engines, and also are needed for Steam as I explained.

BUT THE UG instructions do mention multiple times to load a PS-3 Sound File for PS-3 Diesel Upgrade kit.

The MTH links allow you to do a search that will pull up many engines, go to the 2013/4 and up ones to see the PS-3 engine options.  You can further limit you search by road name and RK versus PR engine.  G

BRYANT, I was only supporting where your confusion was coming from. The title "Protosound Upgrade" does not tell us if that link is a PS2 or a PS3 file. If your new to this and your doing an "UPGRADE" and reading "UPGRADE" instructions, when you go to the website your mind is naturally focused on the word "UPGRADE". I'm sure that is what led you to come here looking for clarification since the website link title is not clear.

Exactly right call on your end.  Once I embraced the advice from the input I received on this thread I was able to load the PS-3 sound and chain file into my engine.  It was a fairly choppy process as quite a few sectors had to be loaded at the slowest speed using the MTH Loader.  I think I had to do it 3 or 4 times.  I actually had to turn the computer off completely and then on for best results.  Could have been something to do with the computer recognizing the cable etc...  In any event, all is good so far.

This ends the saga of the upgrade from PS1 to PS3 for my MTH El Capitan set I bought last year.  I might try the E-8 Super Chief sound file since it is fairly new.  Only downside is that the start-up sequence is clearly 2 engines.  No big thing since there is a B and A dummy in the consist.

On a side note, I just purchased the new Lionel F-3's and was pleasantly surprised to see that each brand had there plusses and minuses.  I am especially happy since the new Lionel engine is not clearly ahead of the 20 year old MTH engine.  Fit and finish for both very consistant.  MTH red paint a little deeper.  Nice to have both.  Pre-ordered the 8 aluminum cars from Scott Mann.  I hope he has enough demand to go into production.  Thanks all for your help.  Off to York.
