A tech should be able to change the audio amp if that's the issue. It's a PS2 3V locomotive so it should be pretty straight forward.

George (GGG) can certainly do it.  I do them as well, but I have a longer backlog, so I'd suggest George for this one.

I'd be glad to change your audio chip I have them in stock ps2 3 volt and ps 2 5 volt audio output chips!

See this thread.  The audio amp IC chip itself is about $3 (plus shipping) but requires above-average soldering skills.  GGG will get you back in business.  You'll obviously pay more for labor/shipping. Given your swap test, I suppose you could arrange to just send in the board-pair which would save big on shipping.  But if it is indeed that amp chip, it blew out for a reason.  Double and triple check the 2 wires going to the speaker looking for any loose/stray strand of wire or slit in the insulation that may rub or contact the metal frame/chassis.  Rotate the trucks in all directions as this can sometimes move the wiring harness.

You ain't kidding!  I used to do them with the soldering iron, but I found the hot air tool makes it easier to get the job done.  Even so, it's not an easy repair, those are very fine pitch leads.

The audio amp p/n is:  TPA2000D1PW.  That is a Digi-Key p/n.  George can probably replace it for you.

I have had the audio chip just quit for no apparent reason a couple of times. GGG has done the repair on each and all has been good since. Looks like Alan Mancus would be another good option.
