I just dug out my old Williams Brass K4s, with an old QS-2 sound system, and the sounds don't work. Rather than fixing the old system, I'm looking to upgrade, but the steam sounds the ERR makes are all generic, none really have the proper whistle and bell.

I tried Lionel's web site, but the sound board for the Legacy K4 is listed as "not available". I assume they only do trades on this item.

Finally, Dallee's new selectable sound systems have the proper bell and whislte, but I have two questions:

What is the sound quality like on these?

Can they operate with Legacy/TMCC?

Thanks.

Lionel K4 board : 691-PCB1-087. A alternate that has a good PRR whistle: 691-PCB1-143. NOTE: Lionel has an error on their website, and lists the part # -087 with 2 different items. You will need to specify.

These are TMCC boards, not legacy.

Unfortunately, the new ERR system is not compatible with older railsounds boards with out a converter board which I don't think ERR is making anymore.

The Dallee stuff is conventional only, so that's not an option.

Doesn't the medium steam from ERR have a similar whistle as the K4?  The whistle sounds a lot like my Legacy K4 whistle.

I played the ERR sound, and it is similar, but it's also sounds a lot like my USRA heavy Mikado, which is lettered for the CNJ, and when we have an operating session, which often involves small children running the trains, I need to be able to tell who's running what engine, so the whistle needs to be distinct, and right now, no two of my engines have the same whistle.

As for Dallee, I know ERR makes that adapter board that they say you can use with any sound system, with the caveat being that it doesn't support diesel ramp-up. Dallee uses a reed switch for chuff, just like ERR, so that shouldn't be a problem with steam, in theory. But in practice, can the ERR/Dallee combination work in command mode?

I was able to get around some compatability issues with my FM, which has an old TAS board. The Cab 1-L will run the TAS board, and the new Railsounds commander, but the TAS won't run the new railsounds commander, so I bought a dummy board, programmed it with the same number as the TAS board, and that solved that.

I'm gathering that I'd have to purchase the 691-PCB1-143, the converter board, a Cruise commander board to make it all work. Is this correct?

Thanks.

I haven't tried it, but the ERR Sound Converter should allow you to use the Dallee board and operate the whistle and bell using TMCC, and the chuff can be generated by the chuff switch.  You won't have crew talk, electrocoupers, etc., but that's one solution.

Is there a way to use railsounds commander and disable the whistle? I was thinking maybe if I added the Dallee that only has whistles and bells, and a conversion board, would that possibly work?

Another set of  posts  related to DCC got me thinking about the possibilities of having both a pure sine ac supply and a square-wave ac supply connected through a dpdt switch. I would like to stay with TMCC at least for my diesel fleet, but the sounds offered by TSunami are, in some cases, more accurate for engines like the K4s, and my CNJ Camelbacks. Also, my Lionel H9 has a great sound system, but that whistle is way too deep, it should have a banshee instead.

Most of my engines have DC motors. Has anybody tried this route? I expect I'd have to use two different handhelds for DCC and TMCC/Legacy.

Thanks.
