I'm  guessing speaker is on it's way out...

.. You could try  turning the vol pot by hand,

Feature reset... Menu/Advanced/ reset engine/ Feature reset.

easy battery test..... How long do the sounds continue on after track power is shut down  (turned  completely off?)

The volume pot is all the way up and only the prime mover has issues with distortion at any volume, I did the whistle and 5 bells command from my Z-4000 and it signaled two horn blasts as successfully completed.  The engine sounds stay on for about ten seconds after track power is shut off and the battery meters out at 9.65 volts.  If the speaker is on its way out why do the other sounds, like cab chatter, horn, bell, and compressor sound fine?  BTW, I am running conventional and do not have the DCS system.

Yours is not the first with this problem posted here on the forum..... The early 5 volt speakers have a tendency to fail over the years...  That's all I have... I would turn the vol down a bit if strictly running conventional.

PS. WE just orders a few 5 volt speakers just in case,, We also have a 5 volt  engine getting scratchy but  haven't done anything yet.

Thank you for the replies Gregg.  How much does a speaker cost and what is the ohm rating?  Any links would be appreciated.

Regards,

Chas

The speakers are 16 ohms and they're not that expensive, something like $12 or so comes to mind.  If you look at your speaker and the plating is starting to flake off, STOP USING IT and get a new speaker.

Thank you for the reply John.  Is the new MTH replacement speaker an improvement over the earlier ones in regards reliability, overall sound, and bass response?  Or are there other choices?

The new speaker will probably be pretty similar, but there are lots of choices, I look on eBay and popular sites like AllElectronics.
