Protosound 3.0 Help

On the battery check, that has been posted a lot. It simply shows the state of charging. 

On the volume, is the volume pot set to zero?

Pot is turned all the way up.  And it always show low even after been on the track for 2 hours and power going to it...I just don’t understand why...all the other engines  say ok even if they only been on the track 2 minutes

It says low because the system is charging. It should say OK at some point. If you kill the power to it does the engine play full shut down sounds for a couple of seconds? Does the engine retain it's other settings? It's not the tiny new diesel switcher thing?

 I really would not pay attention to the charging state unless there's bigger issues?

ps 3 engines use a super cap not a battery.

I have run this engine is a SD70ACE Heritage Reading Diesel.  30-20235-2

it has run couple hours a day for the last two weeks...it always says low....

Do the Super Cap go bad?   Is it something I can order and replace ?

Why would you need to change them? What else is it doing?

Does it play shut down sounds when you kill the power?

Here is what happens...if I start it up with iPad app on Wi-Fi  or if I use the DCS remote.  It starts up but is silent no sounds at all.  When I hit the volume up button on the remote the sounds come on.. and every time I want to start it up I have use the volume button to get the sounds ...I don’t have to do that with my other engines that are ps2 & ps3. When I start them the sounds come right on...and with the iPad on Wi-Fi I can’t get the sounds on at all on that engine I always have to pick up the DCS remote and turn the sounds up with volume button...so I check to see what it says under system battery check and it always says low...now I know it does no have a battery...my other PS 3 engines don’t have a battery but when I check them it always says ok.    Just trying to figure out why I have to go through this volume thing every time I start it up...

Dawg, forget the battery readout.  Answer the key question: If the sounds are on, and you cut power to the track, how long do the sounds continue?

 Maybe 3 -4 seconds 

Check against a watch to be sure.  That's a bit short.  Does the no sound startup occur if loco has neen shut down from temote but track power left on?  Is it still under warranty?

No warranty...it’s a few years old

What about my other question?  Also, did this loco run ok in the past?  If so, the supercap could be failing.  GGG would be the person to contact about replacing it.  He is top board tech in US.

Not sure how it ran in the past I bought it used....it run great...just the sound problem... it just doesn’t hold the  sound volume what set it to...every start up have go and  turning it up.... I will try and find GGG and see what he says..

Sounds like one cap has a bad connection or is going bad.  They are soldered on the board.  The 2 larger white capacitors.  You can reflow the solder and see if that solves the issue.  G

Thanks GGG ..I took the shell off and looked at the 2 white caps. ...one was leaning to the side...I straightened up and it now seems to be working fine....I am guessing it was not getting a good connection....thanks everyone for your help

It's good to be back - having a problem with an MTH "Virginian" - only the front pantagraph works properly - we've tried to switch them but only the front (still) works.  We've looked at both pantagraph motor units and they work (meaning they go back and forth when small amount of dc current from a dc battery.  This should be easy = now all I need is some ideas.  By the way has anyone heard from Dick Koster @MTH.  Hope to hear your voice(s).  Thanx in advance....

Dawg, I'll let GGG weigh in, but seems to me that of straightening the cap solved the issue, you've either got a poor solder joint (could be hard to see) or one of the cap's leads is broken.  When problem recurs, those are items to look for.

I would still solder the connection on the Cap.  G
