I am trying to get information about a PS1 engine, but can't find anything on the MTH website.  What I currently know is that it is an F-3 AA and a F-3B. The number on the B is MT-2152B.  They are L&N road name.  Trying to find out if only one A unit is powered, does only one A have smoke, what lights are on the engines, etc. And is the A unit capable of being upgraded to command control ?  I'm not sure the cost to upgrade and what features would be available. If upgraded, is there an appropriate sound file available?

Any info or point me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Thanks for the info.  That helps a lot. Does anyone know if the dummy A and B units of 1997 vintage are lighted? Can't tell from description.

Now the question is can the powered A unit be upgraded to PS3 including MARS light and add a smoke unit? Can lights (if needed) and possibly smoke be added to the other A or B units?  Then what would a ballpark cost to have this done?

I'm thinking it may be better to find an already existing PS3 ABA.  Does anyone know if the shells of the 1997 premiers would fit a current premier PS3 model (i.e in order to change the road name)?

Since the trailing dummy A has the electrocoupler, one would presume it also has lighting.

You may be better off just buying a PS/3 set of F3's and getting them painted.  These don't have smoke according to the user's manual.  I have a similar A-B-A set from the same time period for Reading RR, none of them have smoke.  In looking at the cost to upgrade and add smoke to all of them, I've come to the same conclusion, probably not worth the effort.  Remember, I give myself a big discount on the work as well.

You might be able to swap the shells to a new PS/3 set, but keep in mind there will be significant work involved.  You'll have to move any lighting over, and you'll have to fit the smoke funnel to the L&N shells.

How handy are you? Comfortable working with electronics? If you can get the set cheap (i.e. under $200) the PS3 diesel upgrade kit might make it worth while, if you install it yourself. The installation of the kit is not hard, just time consuming routing and shortening wires. It will be easier in something like the F3, as you'll have more room inside the carbody than a SD40-2 for example. I've installed a PS3 diesel kit in both a Premier SD40-2 and a Premier E8 for a friend and the E8 was a much easier experience. The biggest issue you would run into in your case is some sort of tether arrangement to get the wiring to the coupler on the dummy A unit and installing smoke, if you must have it.
