Bought a like new MTH Dash 9 w/ ps1 from LHS. Everything works very well however it starts in reverse. Put in a new battery before I started it, let it warm up and selected direction button and it went in reverse. Starts in reverse then neutral then forward and runs very well. My question is, does this mean the reverse board is going out or is there another issue.

Interesting, About the same time as MTH proto-1 there was an outfit called QSI that sold reverse units and sound systems, with a few extra features than the MTH board ,  ( Called  QSI-2 plus.  you sent in the top board and it came back with the new features.

Anyway one of the feature was start up direction,   Feature 5.. you could program the engine to start up in reverse.   It's very unlikely this is one of the boards but what else might it be?? Are the head lights in sink with the direction?

Maybe someone has rewired the engine?

Not that this is normally a problem with a Dash 9, but does it start in the direction of the tiny F on the side of the locomotive?  That F marks the front.  Another thing of note is that it's really easy to change the start direction of PS-1 locomotives.  The connectors are the same, just different colors.  All you have to do is swap them on the board and it'll start backwards.  Could be someone just plugged them in reversed.  Just open it up and swap the plugs and you are good to go.
