Recently purchased an MTH F40PH railking amtrak set that has the 3 volt ps2 system. Since receiving I decided to change out the battery, so bought the MTH blue battery pack and installed in this engine.

After chanigng the battery and reassembling the engine, I put it on my track at about 14 volts and left it to charge. After a few hours the engine is still showing a dead battery.

Engine starts up has sounds but will not move in conventional and isn’t registered by dcs wi if.

Is it required that you use the external battery charger to get these batteries to work? For some reason I thought you’d be able to charge the battery off track power. I do not have the MTH charger, only external 9 volt battery charger I use for PS1 batteries.

Any input is greatly appreciated. Other than the issues I’m having it really is a beautiful set for the price I paid.

Thanks, Liam 47768A90-4054-4B2C-B95A-7C98E6A086BC

First off, you can't do a conventional reset with no battery, so that's out.  Also, since he's tried it in conventional and it doesn't respond, it's not likely to.

First step would be to try a different battery, even if that one was purchased "new".  The blue battery packs are still old, and maybe it's just a bad battery.  I'd go for the cheap fix first.

Do you have DCS?

Thanks for the reply. I do have a dcs system and have been fooling around trying to get the engine to work. All my ps3 stuff runs fine so at least I know controls are not the culprit.

I will take your advice and order another battery and pick up the external mth charger. I might even get a bcr2 my only concern is if the charging circuit is shot how id get the bcr to function.

I will keep everyone posted how this turns out

Make sure pins full inserted in the connector when attaching to battery.  Also follow back to the board 2 pin connector and make sure that is plugged in.  Try running in DCS, no battery needed.  if it does not run in DCS could be a board problem.  If it does run in DCS, and the battery can light a 6V bulb and keep it lite dimly.  The battery is good, and you may have a board problem.  Usually fixable. I am happy to report after purchasing an mth battery charger, all is working right. The engine runs nice and smooth with my DCS Wi-Fi explorer and conventional mode.

I double checked my internal connections in the engine making sure battery was secure. I then gave it a 12 hour charge with the charger. 39515C8D-8DD6-484B-9FD4-9D5029DCF76C84C400B4-D8DE-484F-BD3C-0F5A36D9B48D
