my engine is item#20-3120-1  its an 080 steam engine. I swaped the tether for another one of the same kind. its a ten pin tether btw. that made know difference. I put the old tether back on. it seems to be in the femal plug on the engine. it looked ok but it could be the culprit here.

at least its is not a fried board. just need to have it looked at. thanks vernon

Thanks jon, the engine has a bcr installed by me. The original blue batteries were doa. So in went my bcr to see if it would load in and r.  It added to the remote fine and all sounds seemed normal. At first the engine did not move and the front coupler started firing without stoping when in forward. Then I noticed the cab light was out. I then jiggled the tether plug. Got the cab light back and all was fine, but the engine still took off like a rocket. Seems you are correct about the plug. I will talk to my dcs guru ray manley he can fix it. I do not want to futher any more damage on this nice engine. I picked this up off the bay its cosmetically like new. It was a good price also. Just glad the boards ok.
