Hello all, I’m having some issues with 3 different PS2 5 volt engines. After being in storage for about 6-7 years because I didn’t have a layout, I’ve pulled out all my engines and built a layout in my new home. My PS3, PS2 3 volt, and tmcc engines all run great. But all 3 of my PS2 5 volt have issues. Before testing I replaced and charged all batteries.

One PRR 2500 HP has low speaker volume, took it apart to see all the junk caked on the speaker. I’ll have to replace that as I know this can be fatal to the board.

The other two appear worse. I have a Reading Sw1500 which shorts when on the track, no pinched wires or disconnections that I can find. And a PRR railking Decapod which already had the board replaced  earlier in its life. It’s totally dead when I apply track power, no click, lights, nothing. Same in conventional. Did a conventional reset and still nothing. Any suggestions for these two would be greatly appreciated before I take them in.

This is sadly not unusual for the old 5V board.  I recently took one of mine out of the closet and Shazam, dead short!  The 5V board on the tester confirmed the issue, board is dead.  You have identified the two most common symptoms, a dead short, or just no response of any kind.  My Reading SW1500 also has a new board because of the same issue.

Obviously, it's useful to check the wiring and battery to see if there's any issues there.
