Hello all, New too these forums but not new to the hobby. I have an interesting problem that i cant seem to figure out with a 5v ps2 board..  I purchased this board for next to nothing on the internet (yes i know buying a 5v these days is a risky purchase) too fix an old bantam 4-6-2 From the first set ive ever owned. i had been tinkering with the  smoke unit fan and shorted one of the wires and fried the board... this was 8+ years ago

Fast forwards too 2015.. put the new board in.. everything works fine BUT there is this awful static along with all the engine sounds.. its not distortion, and the speaker is in near perfect shape. the battery is new and charged, I have tried the board in another 5v engine i have with The exact same results.. does anyone have any ideas? sound is loud and clear all the way up and down but there is an almost radio like static along with it. static increases and decreases with volume levels..

Why not upgrade too a 3v? well i really like the orginal soundset..Its almost nostalgic too me now as this was the first ps2 engine i had as a kid..

any help will be much appreciated..

I have a board like it, changed a few caps and still no clearing static.  Replaced Audio and still no go.  Processor or some components are failing and inducing the static.

If MTH has an upgrade of the original sound file you can go to the 3V and the sounds are the same.  They just reformat to the 3V file type.  Best to go that route, before the 3V boards no longer available.  G

i guess that does seem like the best route to take... thanks for your reply. Its quite an interesting sound similar almost too radio static.  sometimes it dies off almost completley and then comes right back.

Thanks GGG for your help.. 3v It is

i know they made a 3v Bantam 4-6-2 but any recordings i can find have a different bell/whistle. maybe im just too picky..

Yes it is the blue comet version. thank you for the link GGG.. i have never seen the ps2 "upgrade" icon before.. I will try one of these soundsets out on another of my 3v engines to confirm..

Untill i get another 3v board, Ill continue tinkering with my Static dilema.. Im almost curious too see how it will finally die or how long it will last.

Thanks again for all your help, you and a few others on this forum have taught me everything i could ever need to know about the ps2/3 electronics.

My opinion is MTH, but other talk about using higher quality speakers.  The problem is size of those speakers.

Good news is 4 ohms are easier to come by then 16 ohms as most audio amps seem to be going with lower impedance speakers now a days.

If you have an old PS-1 8 ohm or Lionel 8 ohm, though they are typically lower quality, the db difference in output won't be as bad as the 16 ohm will be.

MTH BF-0000034 is a good 50mm dia 17mm tall 4 ohm speaker that would be used n the 3V version of your engine.  Your engine may even have a baffle cover??  G
