PS3 Niagara issue

One way to eliminate the motor as the problem is remove the shell and wire the motor directly to a DC supply like and HO power pack. I am assuming all the electronics are in the tender and applying DC to the motor won't get fed back into the tender with the tether disconnected. If you open the shell and see a board in there then you would want to unsolder the motor connections first.

have you taken the locomotive off the track. turned it upside down and watched the wheels turn?

It doesn't seem like a motor, the motor appears not to be irregular.

Maybe a bent wheel or a gear our of true on its axle or stripped.

Is the motor mount tight?

Wow, do the lights flicker?

The drive train as all been checked out in service shop. Lights do not flicker

The video's are the best info I have. Put them on full screen and enough volume to hear well.

I hate to doubt you but are you sure?  lol

The product description has DCC features listed which would make me think there is a DCS/DCC switch and a 2/3 rail switch.

I had one that ran like this.  I suspected tach reader or dirty flywheel but it was the wipers and black on the tender wheels.

Oh well it was worth a try...

I have seen this.  Look at the drawbar on the locomotive end and check for the plug from the locomotive being fully seated in the drawbar.  If that does not help, I would hand your boiler board to a MTH tech that has a PS3 test fixture.  I am not big on the PS3 boiler boards and have replaced several.

This unit as been in out of the shop since new, my tech shop wants one more crack at it. I forgot how many different things where done with this.

Clem,  is your guy a real tech?  A real tech would not need another crack if he processed the repair in a proper fashion.  Let us know if you need any help.

You have to start with the mechanicals and than move to electronics.  Running off DC as mentioned to see if some binding, misalignment or loose motor bracket etc are in play.  If not and everything is quiet and smooth, move to the electronics.  If the boiler board overheats the thermistor will kick motor out.  Or and intermittent in the harness connectors can cause these types of issues.   G

If you go inside Clem, can you take a pic of the boiler board? I may have one.

MTH only made two boiler boards.  A FET board and a relay board.    Clem, see if your tech guy has the PS3 test fixture and golden boards to test your boiler board.
