This is one of the project I have been waiting to get to for a long time. I have opened up three QSI PS-1 engines and I can not find the white battery of death. Am I missing something or did they not come with a 9 V battery.

what kind of battery is in them?
Take a peek in the fuel tank( from the bottom ) if diesels.
It would be helpful to give the MTH item number and engine description.
And also a dead battery is the kiss of death white or green!
Are these MTH PS/1 engines? Older QSI boards didn't have batteries all the time, some did, some didn't.

One of them is a Loco Sound
30-2373-0
Locosound has no batteries.
30-1133-0 is a horn board only, no batteries. The 30-1130-1 would be the ProtoSound version.
The MT-2100LP EMD SD-45 doesn't have a battery either from what I find, the box doesn't mention ProtoSound. Here's something I find...
MTH modern O gauge Pennsylvania SD-45 diesel locomotives in original boxes. Catalog numbers are two 2100LP and 2100L, Protosound on cab numbers 6146 and 6145, 6147 equipped with a horn. Trains are in C8 condition with run time.

Nope, typically the batteries are pretty obvious. The inside isn't large enough to lose a 9V battery all that easily. 
If the board is a single flat board DCRU and may maybe a short fat board on top, that is a DCRU with whistle or horn only board.
Only QSI 3 stack boards for QSI, or MTH ProtoSound 2 stack boards required battery. The PS has two longer board stacked together, plus volume control pot. G
Thanks G now I know the difference. I when nuts looking for the batteries of death. I am just glad I did not purchase the BCR in advance.
