I have several premiere locomotives and on my K4 and J1 Hudson both Proto 1 when I went to remove the bolts to replace the traction tires the bolt didn't turn and the bottom the bolt screws into came out with it on both locomotives. Did MTH do this or did they just make them too tight at the factory. If so I guess I'll have to contact Midge to replace the parts. The went back in ok by gently tapping very gently with a small hammer.

Thanks Roy,

My K4 Pacific and J1e Hudson have the same problem so MTH mus have used Loctite in there early days. I'll try that next time I need to replace the traction tires and might contact Midge for some spares. I used a tongue compressor to gently tap the collar and bolt back in the driver with a very small hammer so I wouldn't damage the bolt. You can use a popsicle stick also. Especially when tapping in the collar directly hitting it can ruin the hole and you will never get the bolt in.

Hi Charlie,

The MTH locos in question here seemed to have blue Loctite on their rod screws.

In my opinion, all forms of Loctite with which I am familiar are too strong for toy train applications, with the possible exception of the worm gear on the motor. That's why i use clear fingernail polish on the threads.

I am only familiar with Loctite Blue, which is supposedly weaker, and Loctite Red, which is more aggressive, and don't know anything about the type that gunsmiths use. But I have observed that everyone who uses Loctite seems to go with whatever type is too aggressive for our soft little Chinese brass screws.

I never used anything to hold the rod bolts on, I have a couple of the nut drivers that were put into I think K Line Steamers to use on rod bolts. They look similar to a Exacto knife and as long as you snug tight them and not give that last turn that will strip or break the bolts they hold fine. I never had any come off while the train is running.
