Those modules are not writable as they are. You either have to buy writable block modules or crack one open and cut a wire. Then download the latest version 1.53 to your windows computer and using Lionel's LSU "app" on the windows computer, write the new version(s) to the writable module (first say the Cab and then the Base)  and use it to update your Cab and then also your Base.

would you be happy if Lionel charged for the update?

it is a one time cost, unless you use a blue module and then the updates are free.

Actually, you don't need to update. If the system is working with the locos and equipment that you have, leave it alone.

There is a manual included with your purchase. Try reading it. It's available on Lionel's website in pdf, also.

Neither does Lionel.  The download is free. So your statement is irrelavant. You need several extra pieces of hardware to upgrade DCS That MTH doesn't supply. That's not bad but just the way it is. They both have some costs related to doing an upgrade.

The one time purchase of black modules is the only cost If you even buy them or make them.

Here's something to try. If you have a newer Legacy system that came with 1.5 try overwriting the blue module. They was a rumor they were no longer read only.

While i I agree in the newer systems a black module would be nice, there are ways to have the modules cost you nothing.

MTH does not charge for upgrades, I believe...

I was thinking that the modules included with the 990 should be upgradeable. And Marty mentions further on that it might be. But just including a black one with 1.5x on it might be the best.

That I agree with or just make it known the newer system blue modules are writable (If that's truly the case).

1 black module is all you need. IMO dump the tan ones in favor of the black modules.

Exactly! Its the whole "keeping up with the Joneses, gotta have the lateset and greatest" mentality these days.

I'm still running the old fashioned 1.4 that my system came with. I've not seen any really big developments in recent software updates, some of which like the new AUX 3 icon isn't of any use until future locomotives are equipped for it.

......1.52..... 1.53, I'll wait for a 2.0 or something before I even consider it. My legacy stuff all ran great under the old TMCC cab1 for that matter

1.5 introduced the advance lighting menu. If you are happy with what you are running don't upgrade. No one is holding a staple gun to your head to upgrade. Some of us like to see what's new or crush some bugs if relevant.

But it if you do want to upgrade there is no problem with asking questions.

Understood, and I appreciate your experiences and information regard all of the updates Marty.

Not so much in this instance, but on some occasions it "seems" like some folks "rush to upgrade". Then run into trouble due to a glitch or error, while doing the upgrade and then can't run their trains.
