Question about wires on Lionel Loco 885 | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

I have a Lionel loco 885. It has 3 pairs of wires coming out of it (see picture). One pair is orange/black, the 2nd pair is red/blue, and the 3rd pair is brown/grey. I want to know what exactly the 3 pairs of wires do. I assume one is motor, one is headlight, and one is track power (perhaps). If I want to power this with battery, can I send DC voltage to the wires that go to the motor (whichever they are). Is the headlight an LED (ie, do I need to add a resistor to any power I send to the headlight)? Thank you.

Those wires were not put there by the factory. Someone did that at home. Who knows why?

You will have to take the boiler off to see where they attach.

When you do, you can post a picture so we can tell you what the wires are for.
