PaPa Steve,

I just picked up an old AF Lighted Caboose, can I Change out the Incon Light in this old American Flyer Caboose with an LED bulb, like I did with my older Lionel lighted Rolling Stock, or will I need to add resister some place in the line.  The old Incon light is definitely drawing some serious power.

Hi Dave,

I believe it is a socket based, screw in bulb, correct? If so, AutoIllumination makes LED retrofits that can handle 18 VAC. You don't need a resistor if you buy one like that. You might look at the soft white color.

Gentlemen,

Thanks much, I believe I may have a replacement LED Screw in bulb that will go in that type socket, mine however looks just a might different than what OLF has pictured.  OLF exhaustive process, I liked that!

Rob thanks also for giving me the numbers of the cars and dating them.  Real nice to know what I own now.  Just starting to pick up some AF Tin after all these years.

Dave,

Flyer did use the big round glass bulb heads, but the screw base is the same size as Lionel (E10). The size of the glass head won't matter in this application. I suspect that would be a different matter for the headlight of an engine such as the O gauge Hudson.

my caboose has curlyQ couplers so i'm not sure if i've ever had it on a powered track.  i really have nothing that will pull that prewar Flyer 8-wh car train reliably.  pretty sure that might be an original bulb.  at first glance it appears burnt out, but that tinting goes past the glass, down the neck about up to the threads as if it were coated (to keep the lumins down?).  and looking as good as i can inside, the filament looks intact.  ...have to track down a transformer.

Joe,

Actually it 3, Z4K's, the 2nd hand one, just had a board failure, it will be repaired, 3 old ZW's and 2 KW's, powering the entire Train Room when complete.  The power supplies were purchased a little at a time over many years for when I finally got my Train Room.

One of the old ZW's runs the Living Room Christmas Layout, and is stored and set up with it.
