I've picked an old 300 steamer that I restored.  Now will be changing the motor to DC and probably using a 4 amp Tsunami system with speaker for DCC and sound.

Any recommendations for the motor?  Some say I can use the standard 1 amp HO version of the Tsunami DCC - any comments?

Thanks Nick & Tom,

The thing I am most concerned about is the DCC unit, (which I put on hold with a deposit at a local hobby store).  They are not used to S gauge/scale and I did talk to a member of North Penn S Gaugers, but not extensively.  The general agreement is that HO DCC units are good enough for S, even though there are heavier duty units available.

Fit and durability are my concerns.  HO won't have any problem with fit, but the heavier duty units are more durable.  Hope someone out there has done this and has an opinion.

This is from SnS:

All of the different motors I use draw 1/4 amp or less under no load, BUT most of them stall at around 3 amps at 15v. I recommend heavy duty (4 or more) amp decoders if you are going to install in heavy locos or pull big loads. It's what I do. Why take a chance on sucking the guts out of a 1 or 2 amp HO decoder?

Hope it gives you the info you need...

Francine,

The link is to an article Bill Clark wrote about converting an AF Pacific to DCC… lot of pictures.  He is using a SoundTraxx Tsunami for motor control and generate sound.  I was hoping Bill would chime in on this because this is his topic and he has been a member of this forum. Give it a look and see what you think.  I’ve stashed a lot of info on this topic for future use and I’ll post links as I find it.
