Questions about Mth diesel trucks.

Hi I have recently returned to the hobby. I have picked up a few proto 2.0 and 3.0 engines with 6 wheel trucks. I have noticed that some have 6 drive wheels and dual pickups per truck and some have only two drive wheels with only one pick up with a idler axle. The ones with 6 drive wheels drive straighter down the track. The ones with only two look all crooked. When did Mth change the design and how do they determine which engine gets what? I much prefer the 6 wheel drive trucks. Is there a conversion available to convert 4 drive wheels to 6?

The Proto 3/2 trucks are the 6 axle trucks with the blind flange in the center and multiple pickups. The inner blind axle is the older design of truck block. Models with new or upgraded tooling have been getting the 3/2 trucks, and models made using older tooling still get the original style truck. I dont think they're interchangeable, as the motor mounts in a different location.

Another thing I have noticed is that the Rail king line must still use the old casting as I have a brand new Sd70ace with proto 3.0 and it has only four driven wheels per truck with one idler.

That's because the newer design typically requires O42 curves at a minimum, while RK engines are designed to operate on O31 curves. This also means that RK diesels are not 3 rail/2 rail capable.
