Electronic reverse units are quiet. Dallied Electronics (I’m not affiliated with them) sells them. ERR (3rd Rail - again not affiliated ) sells them. I’ve used both of their products and have been happy with them. If you’re looking for a quiet mechanical unit, good luck, it’s pretty much the luck of the draw. You could lock the Eunit in one direction, I often do that - I find the buzz annoying as well.

Some run them on DC..but they say the plunger can get magnetized.
A couple of ways. Either run it on DC, or another trick I've used is a small rubber bumper in the top of the coil, the buzz is usually when the core bottoms out.
A reminder get one that is capable of operating an AC Lionel motor.
I've had some struggles with noisy e-units in the past. I wouldn't mind seeing a schematic of the DC mod--is it just the e-unit, or is the motor current rectified as well? Also John, do you have any photos of your rubber bumper?
No photos, it's been years since I did much of anything with mechanical E-Units.
The DC mod is simply running the coil on DC with a diode and usually a capacitor. Obviously, it's only the coil running on the DC, so you can lift the coil wire on the ground side of the reverse switch and insert the diode and cap.
Remember that if you run the coil on DC, you stand a better chance of magnetizing the E-unit, such that it will be reluctant to cycle when you want it to.
It's not hard to demagnitize it, just connect it to AC momentarily. 
I've seen them run that way for years, obviously YMMV.

It seems that the MPC Era E-units buzzed much worse the postwar ones. I found that if you straighten out the angle of the e-unit pawl at just the right amount it eliminates most if not all of the buzz. Take out too much of the angle and it will not cycle properly. Kind of a trail and error type of thing.
Dallee is the best, from a sales standpoint or help installing! Have been dealing with them for years!! Good luck!
