Greetings Everyone,

Just purchased a MTH Reading & Northern Heavy Pacific from Stockyard Express (Thanks Clyde!) and it is supposed to have a "Quillable Whistle".   The only information provided with the engine is a generic abbreviated "Cheese Ball" owners manual that outline the basic stuff.   However, it is noted that for a "complete manual" one must go to the MTH site and it is downloadable from item page by clicking on the "Open Book" icon.   Well, I follow the instructions and discover that the "Open Book" icon is inactive and the complete manual is unavailable.   Soooo, my question is, how do I activate the Quiliable Whistle?   Any help will be appreciated!!

I would like to graciously thank Engineer-Joe, MRMACHER and last but not least Barry.   I tried the app on my tablet and it worked as stated (very cool).   I will also try the soft key on my remote as well.  I am still getting used to WiFi so I use my remote more than my tablet.   However, I would still like to download a manual for this engine.  Thanks again gentleman!

I just received my long awaited Premier 4-6-2 Ps-4 Steam Engine and tested it's operations as soon as possible. I'm still waiting on the DCS WiFi Digital Command System 2 (50-1039) so I had to buy the less capable DCS Explorer last year.  I learned that the Explorer won't operate the quillable whistle and I have reserve myself to wait till later this year for the newer TIU.  However, like Chief Bob points out, the Engine only comes with a basic quick start manual and does not mention the quillable whistle.  The longer manual on the MTH site also doesn't mention the quillable whistle.  The Engine came with the standard replacement traction rings and a larger coupling, but it also came with a long skinny funnel that looks like a method for inserting smoke fluid into the quillable whistle.  After searching more on this site, I saw that the quillable whistle top easily comes off.  So what's the funnel for?  Also, this is the first time one of my engines didn't come with a sample smoke liquid tube.  FYI: Beautiful Engine.IMG_3266IMG_3267IMG_3268IMG_3269

Im' new to MTH stuff and can't seem to get mine to sound as good as that.  Can you show your technique of rolling the thumbwheel and how to get that sound?  Or are you doing it with app?

@Sean's Train Depot , I was using the remote when I made this video.

Quilling with the remote does take a sensitive touch.  Your only making slight rolls to the thumbwheel to get the tones you hear in my video.  I recommend you play with it a bit and you'll be able to replicate the sounds you hear in my video.

Can someone tell me if the whistle steam feature requires adding smoke fluid to just the smokestack, or is there another place to add smoke fluid. The instructions that came with the locomotive, as well as the online ones are a bit lacking in this regard.

Thanks,

Byron

All MTH engines that have whistle steam have a separate and not connected smoke unit and thus steaming whistle  needs it's own smoke fill.

Again, do not fall into a Lionel usage trap because they (Lionel made dual smoke units) that share a common reservoir and thus can be common filled-smokestack.

See the below repost from this topic and note the removed steam dome to reveal the steaming whistle (remember, MTH terminology is different than Lionel) fill location.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Got a little confused because the whistle was making smoke from the get go. You all most likely saved me from completely smoking (no pun intended) the wicking material in the unit. The only other thing I can think of is that MTH put some fluid in the unit prior to shipping, but that seem unlikely.

Cheers,

Byron
