Re: Railfan cover 4014 OOPS

I got the July issue of Railfan at the local Barnes and Noble yesterday and noticed a serious goof up on the cover:

They have a photo of UP 4014 and right away I noticed the number board had an extra digit on the fireman’s side and an extra marker lamp. What they did was when they digitally put the magazine masthead behind the top of the locomotive, they did a bad job of putting the engine back over the words, so there was an overlap in that corner.
Odder still, a friend's subscription copy doesn’t have the error.
I can only assume they made one production run with the error, realized they had messed up the cover, then went back and printed more with the cover looking as they’d intended. I’ll be sure to keep this one, as I have a feeling this will be something train fans will be talking about for a while (and I now know that not every issue has the error).
I'm thinking of calling this, "Big Boyy, the race to publish"...

Yeah weird ... my guess is while building it into the “copy” logotype and such it was misaligned..

Otto does indeed rock. I've talked with him in person at Winterrail this year, and I'm currently working with him to get a layout article into RMC.

This is one of the corrected versions, from a good friend of mine in Florida, a subscription copy.

It makes me wonder how many of the "40144" ones got printed. In some way, they'll be considered more "collectible" than the correctly printed image, I'm sure.

Heck, the error ones might be worth as much as ten cents more in a few years!

UP was going to have two trains if memory serves, each pulled by steam (844 and 4014 as UP has enough coaches for both). That went out the window when the UP steam team got so close to the deadline they had to have 844 along just in case 4014 wouldn't make such a long trip for it's first real outing.

Thankfully the worry was for nothing and 4014 apparently did just fine.

But yeah, the race never happened.

That's okay. Meanwhile the folks over at Kalmbach had some mistakes in the special Big Boy magazine. The most serious was identifying diesels 4014 and 4884 (the two that pulled Big Boy 4014 from Pomona to Cheyenne) as SD70ACe's instead of SD70M's. I attributed the errors are a result of wanting to get the issue out quickly after the special run to Ogden.
