It's in West Virginia, but the Elkhorn Inn is excellent. Great food, and the NS mainline is right across the street. There is an upstairs porch for viewing and they have a scanner so you can hear what's going on. NOT the place you want to go for a nice, quiet peaceful night's sleep! If you're deaf, you can feel it when the trains pass.

Greetings Everyone,

As posted in a previous thread, my wife and I visited Gallitzin, Pa this past Thursday and Friday and had the pleasure of lodging at the World-Famous Tunnel Inn.   It has been many years since our last visit (IIRC Conrail diesels could be seen all along the “West Slope”) but the wonderful memories have been extremely well preserved by Stationmaster Bob Elder, the new owner.  A warm and friendly greeting awaited our arrival and we were promptly escorted to our room, The ALCO.  The room was tastefully appointed and clean as a whistle.  Ditto for the private bath which included a shower with plenty of hot water.  Our room had self-regulating climate control, cable TV, a small refrigerator and complimentary WiFi.  The guest rooms are located on the second floor and a common hall way leads to a very comfortable covered deck which overlooks the Norfolk Southern two track mainlines that go directly under Tunnel Hill.  Continental Breakfast is nice touch and coffee is available throughout the day.  My wife loves the Tunnel Inn and we’ll be going back later this year.   Real close to Horseshoe Curve and The Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona.  Not far from Cresson, Carney’s Crossing and The Brick Yard as well.

I have  rumbled a train by there many times

Two years ago we stayed in a nondescript Mariott on the west side of Kingston, NY. Tracks right along the rear of the hotel. Plenty of trains to keep you up all night.

A favorite of mine, albeit much farther away, is the Notchland Inn, north of Bartlett, NH. It sits along the Conway Scenic RR as it runs up through Crawford Notch.

The Bridgeview in Marysville (Enola/Harrisburg) is at the west end of the Rockville Bridge on the NS Mainline across PA.    The line from Enola passes behind it but is hidden by trees in summer.     Great views of the bridge and a nice deck out back along with a parlour indoor viewing room.

This is an old building but the rooms are clean and comfortable and it includes a good breakfast.

I have stayed there 3 times and had my wife with me once.   She thought it was OK too.    It is not so noisey because it is just a bit lower than the tracks.     Also it is far enough from Harrisburg that there is generally some wildlife on the river.

I have also stayed a number of times at the Station Inn in Cresson.    Also an old building and also clean and nice.    My wife found this one to be too noisey with the trains passing.
