I am no expert on this (and many other things).  It's difficult to opine which product meets your color needs. I have used several  different "red primer" off the shelf products for some of my buildings and the shades differ.  Some are more brown red, some are a little orangey, which is OK because older brick buildings did have differing color bricks.  But seldom do I just paint one color and leave it.  I usually weather and over spray to achieve an aged and a little grimey look for a building especially near track. But for a specific RR car I understand wanting to be as close to the actual newly painted version as a starting point.  You may have to experiment with different products to see what appeals to you.

Thanks Wild Mary.  As I assume you have done WM projects, what color for boxcar red.

It appears that DupiColor now longer offers the Red Oxide color in their acrylic spray paints but Krylon offers the same color.  It's Krylon K09186000 COVERMAXX Primer, Red Oxide in a 12 ounce spray can.  The COVERMAXX is formulated to be used on plastic.  You should be able to pick this up at any auto supply store as it's used on fiberglass & plastic car bodies and trim.  Depot and Lowes probably carries also.

I used the first plastic specific paint that came out. I think (krylon or rusty???) It sprayed and foamed like DOW's "scrubbing bubbles". It was thick as mud and wiped out all the details. What a mess. (I paint autos pretty well) I never had CLEAN plastic shed paint. I won't use the plastic specialty paints again... good luck if you choose that route. I'd sooner be careful with lacquer. (lacquer can eat plastic if great care isn't taken; no wet coats. misting and lots of dry time before a recoat. I.e., lots of very light mists/ "tack coats")
