Sorry for the long version of the story but want to give the full perspective.

I originally purchased the Lionel Legacy GS4 Daylight #4449 from the 2016 catalog as a BTO.    When the 21" passenger cars were released I ordered the entire 7 car set.  I made a post or couple comments on a thread about them as I had some issues like many others. Long story short I returned them all for a full refund in late February 2018.

Since then I've kept my eyes out for a matching passenger set for my Daylight but wasn't going to jump the gun on anything.  After much searching on this very site and google,I found out about the 18" aluminum cars that were made and decided that was the set I wanted. I was actually happier that there was such a nice set made shorter than 21" but not semi scale like the 15" cars.   I lucked out and found the 4 car set and the 2 car add on being sold by the same seller.   They were received today and I will inspect and run them this evening.

Now while searching for the passenger cars I learned about the matching 18" aluminum StationSounds diner.  After TONS of searching everywhere and the most obscure pages I became aware this won't be an easy piece to find,  at least not for sale.

I decided until I find one that I will repurchase a current 21" Legacy StationSounds diner and sell it if I ever acquire the 18" that matches my set.

So I had another delivery arrive today. It was supposed to be the 21" 6-83110 Legacy StationSounds diner and was advertised as such as well as the item description.  It was sold without the box and I think my first piece ever without one.  Upon inspection I realized the road number didn't match up to the Lionel part number and looking at the undercarriage while programming,  it wasn't legacy. It also felt like it had some heft to it.  Pull out the measuring tape and google the car and road number and OMG IT'S THE 18" ALUMINUM STATIONSOUNDS DINER THAT COMPLETES THE SET!!! Talk about luck.  I' still sitting here in amazement.

Great for you!  What great luck!

All-ways ask questions on on-line buying deals, even if you know the answer.

It can tell you how helpful the seller will be or how knowledgeable they are about the item.

Sellers do Sometimes lie.

Things are often described wrong, or in wrong boxes.

Photos are good, if they are of the real item and not a different model.

Photos with rulers are better.

Congrats- some days are just better than others........always good when you receive a RR surprise.....

Until I realized the original post is 6+ months old, I was going to mention that in all the exictement, one of the styrofoam sheets on the 5th car was still attached between the truck and the floor!   Presumably long since removed now.  I wonder if the adult beverage had anything to do with that? .

An 18" SP sound car would be sweet! I don't have this set, but I do have the one (4 car + 2 Add-on) that was cataloged to go with the PA-1's probably 5-6 years ago.  They never (to the best of my knowledge - I was sure looking out for one!) made a sound car to go with that set, so I 'm sure that doesn't help the scarcity of the one shown.

Doug, I have both the MTH tender and Lionel 18" cars. The colors are indeed very close. I think MTH is the only one to have put this tender out. Not aware of a Lionel version. Good luck in your quest. These are very nice cars.

Pete thank you!  I just started this set. Last week I found the 2016 Legacy GS4 new (lines version) in stock at a hobby shop online and snagged it up. A day latter I found the 2005 2 car pack on the bay. That same night the Railsounds Diner car showed up on the bay as I was scanning pages...snatched it up BIN. So within a week I have everything new except 4 pack of cars (6-29115). So the search continues!  Anyone have a set to sell?  What I have so far has been running around my office non-stop (mostly) since arrival.  Far and away the best set I currently have (VL Niagara included). The SP Daylight GS4 is special to me. I live just on the other side of the river form the reel one (Portland, OR).  My son and I chased the 844 through the Gorge (Columbia River) on a Harley to it's Portland meet up with the 4449. They left home double-headed for Tacoma, WA.

Thanks for the info!

Doug

I didn't notice the age of this thread either! But having read it in full (always a good idea before weighing in), I can answer your question about the absence of a StationSounds diner for the cars you have as I have them too.

The two sets were cataloged in 2010 and are Shasta Daylight cars. The two car set (6-35446) already includes a diner but it is not sound-equipped. Why Lionel did that I do not know. Here's the catalog image of that set showing one car (on the left) that is the diner:

I tracked down the earlier 18" SP StationSounds diner cataloged in 2005 (6-25419) to add to my sets. The paint is not a match for the later Shasta cars and indeed the Alco PA's that were made to pull the Shasta cars are slightly different again. But that's a known hazard with Lionel's renditions of Daylight colors. The StationSounds diner also has ribbed sides whereas all the Shasta cars except the observation are smooth-sided. But Lionel did that because the prototype train had such an observation car. Nice touch, that, of a kind that is missing from Lionel's current ABS car offerings.
