I have ordered rechargeable batteries & the charger also,i have never used them before so when i get them ,they are do to be delivered tomorrow ,do i charge them up now & put them somewhere until i need them ,or do you wait until they are needed then charge them up ? ,the charger is one of those slow chargers ,after doing some research on the forum ,a slow charger seemed to be what was recomended for longer battery life ,what do you guys do ?

You did not say what type battery you have.  If they are NiMH, my favorite, check with a voltmeter and if close to stated voltage put them in storage as these have a long charged life.  Charge them if they have lost say 20-25% from stated voltage.

I love NiMH batteries as they do not leak (at least none of mine ever have) and I have over 50 of them, many several years old and have had to throw out only one or two.  They also hold their charge for months when not in use.  They also perform for a long time when used in cameras with flashes, especially the Panasonic eneloop Pros. My major issue with them is they have only 1.2 volts per cell, which is too low for my several cable remote controls.

Charlie ,they are the tenergy brand that Gunnerjohn uses ,they are NiMH ,low self discharge ,when i check with a volt meter do i need to put a load on them ,or just the battery it self ? ,i bought the charger mostly for my TV remotes ,we switched from Verizon to Cablevision on November 15 ,2019 & ever since then i have used up the original batteries plus i had to change them two more times for a total of 3 times ,with verizon i could probably go close to a year without changing batteries ,as for my cab 1 & cab 2 they are regular alkaline batteries they last a long time as i don't run trains that often ,if these tenergy batteries last me a long time i may switch the cab 1 & cab 2 to rechargeable batteries.
