I do not know much about track powered items. On my new Lionel Redbaron pylon tower, it shows it's power comes from a track connector. Does this mean that the airplane's speed will vari with the throttle setting and just shuts off when the throttle is closed? or can it be powered by another means with the on/off switch from the transformer?

Yes, the speed with vary when the throttle voltage varies. You can power it via the accessory posts of your transformer and use the on/off switch.

I do worry just how fast the planes will fly at full throttle and thus hurting the tower. But if Lionel designed it to work with track power, then full throttle shound not hurt the plylon, but rarely do I run the trains at full throttle.

This is a cool accessory I have had for several years. No problems. You can put a CW80 to the max and the planes will simply fly faster.
I have the santa pylon. I have mine running through accessory power on my CW 80 and have had it set around 14 volts. I have since scaled back the volts to around 11 volts (I think). I liked the speed better, wasn't just whipping around, thought it looked more natural (well at least as natural as santa can look flying in a circle....lol).
